Now the Sacramento Northern was also pretty badass, running a whopping 180 miles from San Francisco to Sacramento and Chico. And for the last months of operation it used the bridge railway which mainly carried the Key System interurban/suburban/urban/streetcar/whatever. This one I also find really interesting for the interoperation of a long-distance interurban with a local service. This one never got modern streamliners, but it did offer parlor cars on its main express services.

And very interestingly the rolling stock used has been bought from Milwaukee. They are leftover from when Milwaukee tried (and failed) to build a high speed rail which was then cancelled after a republican was elected governor.
An African country is more politically stable and able to build transit than the US.

If I remember they were also going to use some of the H5 subway vehicles we have here in Toronto, but they didn't for some reason. The Talgo trains they went with look absolutely ridiculous but then again they're from Spain.

I've always wondered what old school cafe/tavern car service was like in the pre-Amtrak days. I guess one good thing about the days before microwaves was that everything had to be freshly prepared and cooked.

American choo choos were born out of necessity and were put out to pasture as soon as a viable alternative emerged. The fact that they were quality is just a reflection of the time period. People used to have higher standards whereas nowadays everything is just about how cheaply something can be built and how easily it can be cleaned and maintained.

Here in the US, virtually all Amtrak trains have cafe cars, but the service they offer is subpar at best.

Pic related, Amtrak California around 2019 (they've since taken fries off the menu, they were the only Amtrak route that had them, and I've heard that the new Siemens Venture rolling stock will have cafe cars removed entirely, despite the fact that Siemens Venture cafe cars already exist for other routes).

I guess the Japanese try somewhat to individualize trains to a certain degree, since they're often private companies trying to attract passengers.

Regional and local transport is much more important than long distance and HSR. HSR is flashy and impressive, but it's not the workhorse, and only makes sense when you have good local/regional transit, like Japan.
Build up suburban trains, run them every half hour, run regional trains every hour or every two hours. Have feeder buses from the train stations to other towns.
This shit isn't rocket science, but it doesn't get the publicity of le HSR.

These days you get some factory produced Aramark prison quality food warmed up in a microwave, you can't smoke and the drinks are tiny and extremely expensive. Also the trip is slow as fuck, making it even worse.

Also they read so much bullshit propaganda and conspiracy that they legitimately think walkable cities are some sort of communist New World Order agenda and that having to spend so money money and time in a car just do do basic things is an extremely bad thing, it goes to show you just how stupid they are too. Hard to change the policies of a country/state/city when people only know a set in stone way of life and are also just really dumb.

Well once upon a time trains did go to small rural towns (of course it's different if like, you live on a farm that is not even close to the town). It's how people go around even when cars were starting to come into the equation. It was just really convenient for people to wander down to their local train station, buy a ticket and hop on. Sadly, as I was saying in the previous post, very few people in North America understand this so they just think the only option is driving.

None of it will change within our lifetimes though, because to rebuild the train system in North America would take a full century to complete (probably even longer now...previously, rail tracks could be laid very quickly because it was all part of nation building, but now it's all private companies who want to milk governments out of money, so they build slowly).

It may hopefully change one day but it will take a real long time and a complete and total 180 in the North American consciousness for people to get on board with rail again.

My first experience with public transportation was an Amtrak. The second I got inside the station, a culturally enriching man harrased me for some cash, while a small village of Chinese tourists flipped through their Mandarin-to-English handguide, trying desperately to ask me which train went to New York City.

Once I was inside the train, the bathrooms were a disaster, the meals were anemic, and a passenger made sure to include everyone into their life by putting their cellphone on speaker mode. Over 4 hours it stank like weed. A morbidly obese lady sat next to me. She fell asleep and snored something rather gutteral. At least the sound of 30+ foreigners shouting over eachother drowned out the noise out in a thoughtless cacophony

The transfer at NYC was the worst. The station was a rat-maze filled with trash. There was no place to rest due to the vargrants using it as a rest stop. A man would not stop shouting about how the FBI was reading his mind through the HVAC system. Judging by the faces of the armed security, this was very much normal. Most amusingly, a hilariously stereotypical Jew (hat, braids, and all) asked me if I was Jewish and in need of any assistance. Somedays I wonder how different my life would have been had I said "Yes".

Notice how NONE of these problems has anything to do with the state of public transportation infrastructure?

At least the view from the train was nice.

Foamers still ride them but half the people are always kids on these things which is fine I guess...kids love trains and stuff...but I don't want to feel part of someone's family day vacation. Private contractors seek to drag things out and cut corners to enrich themselves on the tax payers dime rather than thinking of the greater good. Why should they, if they do their part someone else is gonna fuck it up so they'd be suckers not to. Politicians line their pockets. Meritocracy is forbidden.

Even if we were so somehow revitalize the American spirit and build the awesome train system that our people are capable of with the right leadership, it would be full of the dregs of society that you speak of. Moscow's train system is old as shit, but it's filled with decent people so it's actually worth using. We would have to actually enforce the rule of law that boomercons talk about like it still exists which is politically impossible at this point.

TL;DR: Unless an American Ceaser takes power nothing will change. America will continue to decline into irrelevance. Before you Europeans get cocky, the same is happening to you.

I love the train from dc to Chicago I’ve done it several times.
Train round trip
32.5 hours (it is always late)
350$
Pros:
runs overnight so if you can sleep on the train (I sleep like a baby with the rocking) you are rested)
Big comfy seat
Adventure!
Spring for romette one time was awesome
Cons:
Have to depart at a set time can’t just go whenever
If you want a car at destination have to rent
Limited on what you can bring but not as bad as a plane
Car: I have also done several times it’s a bitch of a drive solo but not bad with someone trading off.
23hour round trip
Gas 125$ my cars usually run out of years before miles but count wear and tear if you want.
Pros
At least 10hours shorter round trip. Sometime train is way behind can be more like 15
Leave any time
Can bring whatever you can fit in, on top, and tow behind your car
Don’t need a rental car when you get there
Cons
exhausted when you arrive from the drive pretty much ruins the arrival day and departure day of your trip
Conclusion train cost 2x-10x as much depending on if I need a car when I get there and takes 10-15hours longer. I want to love it but it’s a struggle
