it's kinda hard to explain it to you because the correct method is automatic behavior for most cyclists.
If you press the threaded rod in the middle of the valve into the valve stem, it lets out air, right? When it's closed, the little threaded cap that goes on that rod is what stops the threaded rod from pushing into the valve. You want to be pulling on the little cap as you screw it in, so that the threaded rod does not move into the valve stem. You pull out and screw in at the same time.
