how often do pilots stretch the go-arounding up until it's unavoidable in order to simply avoid having to actually go-around and all the extra time that requires?

I watch American news and they always have near misses as one of the headline features. But these are (fairly) common and you don't usually hear about them. Why do ""they"" want to plaster it on national news?

You realize how fast airliners move, right? At a hundred miles an hour, half a mile is pretty close. And 728 feet of clearance is close enough to wave to the other pilot. It's a lot closer than planes usually fly when they're flying in formation.

It's cheap and easy content for a dying medium. Lurk avherald for stories and Twitter for pictures and footage, if any. This wasn't practical or worthwhile until fairly recently.

this story was a canary in the coalmine trying to get normies afraid of humans being in control of air travel, which is a tough sell since its been 15 years since colgan. the airlines pimps reached out to their media whores to write this crap and nudge public opinion towards single pilot ops and more autonomous systems.

dont think it really worked. wound up being more of a shot across the bow in the ATC and pilot communities which is now making people even more vigilant.
