I think its a symptom of beer being just a beverage versus in the US where average alcohol consumption is lower, beer can become more an event or special occasion. Thus greater opportunity for craft brewing scene (generally I don't think any other country comes close) which tends to produce more flavorful and full tasting products than the mass market brewers which are even more dominant in much Europe.
German beer is lauded and upheld as some high benchmark but they tend to be a one trick pony in my mind and from what I've tasted. Trapist brewers are legit and the belgians definitely know what they are doing though.
I know its a meme exaggerations are made for humor but America's modern beer culture is one of the few things I'll defend. If produced locally the cost can be pretty palatable in your grocery store or whatever, beer bought at social venues or restaurants in the US is going to rape your wallet no matter what.
