No. Air traffic controllers and pilots aren't doing their jobs. It seems like a recent issue not long after the push for diversity in the airline industry. I don't know if they're related, but it's highly coincidental.

It's honestly insane.
The last fatal passenger plane accident in the US was in 2009 (Colgan Air Flight 3407). In Europe it was Germanwings 9525 in 2015 when the pilot suicided.

I'm not gonna dig up the articles, just search for things like "pilots too white and male", "lack of diversity in airline pilots", "airline vowing woman and minority pilots by", etc. There was a big push for it a few years ago.

that kind of discrimination is only illegal when it's two applicants who responded to your job posting. the applicant pool was formerly mostly white males because of the history of military pilots, but all you have to do is change your outreach focus to more accurately represent the population as a whole and you can easily fix the white male problem by changing the demographics of your applicant pipeline

That only works if you force people to select careers in proportion to the demographics. I see it in engineering all the time. Men disproportionately choose to do engineering; I can’t hire women who didn’t choose to do it. Women don’t choose to be boilermakers or roughnecks. They choose nursing and early education. It’s fine that some careers are dominated by people with certain immutable characteristics. It’s not an -ism; it’s just the reality that some characteristics are better suited than others for tasks. I don’t want a pilot to throw up their hands when they see LAND ASAP in red. I want someone who will stop, take a deep breath, and fly the airplane all the way to the crash site.
