Still rocking my non-chink made Direto X. Does everything I want so no need to upgrade.
I use the Elite intervall app, that came with the trainer. Mostly watch documentaries along the workout. Used to use RGT in free mode but ditched it. Zwift is neat but too expensive to use. The approach with steering enabled courses is very promising tho, I hope they will focus on this.
It's a shame that there are no abstract games on Steam with turbo trainer support. There is huge potential to gamify this beyond simulating lycra flair on screen. There used to be a messenger simulator game for iOS, which supported turbos, but I think it vanished.

I see what you mean, but at least in winter, a turbo makes life easier.
