>Rail makes the most sense when building metros and regional rail (U-Bahn & S-Bahn, used for commuting)
>The stuff that gives trainspotters & yimby's hardons is light rail and HSR, which are inferior to cars/buses and airplanes respectively
>Sub-HSR intercity rail in my experience is much more expensive and slower than taking an intercity coach bus
>Even China's enormous HSR network is under-used and only exists to facilitate surge holiday travel around the lunar new year
What gives with the train autism? I live in Toronto, so I'm familiar with taking streetcars. They are a decent novelty but they move extremely slowly compared to everything else. Like a bus with much longer boarding times and frequently missing lights due to going under the road speed limit. Getting from west Toronto (where I live) to Woodbine beach by public transit takes 90min - 2 hours.
