The ships need to pass thru Locks so are limited in size. Between steel quality being improved greatly and new regulations including inspections, there haven't been any disasters since the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Great Lake Freighters are quite an interesting piece of American and Canaduan maritime history.

There are a lot of other stories and famous shipwrecks, like the story of the Daniel J Morrell. Built in 1906 and sank in 1966, in which 1 crew member survived alone on a raft for 14 hours in the freezing cold.

Another great one being the Carl D Bradley. Built in 1927 and sank in 1958. Only 2 crewmen survived.

This long boi was built in my home town. We still watch the ships go up and down the river but it's been many decades since anyone built a ship there. It's a shame that all of the old industry died out. Some of those boats made back in the first half of the 20th century are still cruising the lakes today. I would have loved to work in the shipyard making boats but the globalists stole my birthright. Now I'm pretty sure the new boats are built in either China or Korea.
