The people that seethe at the addition of bike lanes are just the vocal minority of entitled retard who thinks that 'their money' is being used to create the bike lane.
I've been cycling in Aus for 4 months now and other than an Asian woman nearly hitting me in her minivan because she wasnt looking properly, and not out of malice, I've had no issues.
That said in the UK cars would regularly honk at me and intentionally skim past me really closely, so I know it could be cultural thing that might be worse where you are. The biggest reason though is that the UK has no bike lanes (where I was at least) so I was always 'sharing the road' and that was when drivers would be cunts about it. If the government actually added in bike lines to every road renovation/new road project cycling would be so much safer for everyone involved and even the drivers that whine about it would end up happier and less inconvenienced.
