Do you guys ever have conversations with other people on public transportation, or try picking up girls there?

I feel like people's guards are up very high on public transport, especially Short journeys. I only really find convos starting on extremely long coach trips, and not often. Although, if there's some big bullshit disruption or delay people open up a lot to try and cope (and seeth) I guess

I think it's even worse in modern times where basically everyone is just sitting there on their phone with headphones in, and even ones staring out the window have headphones in so there's really no opportunity to even talk to people without it disturbing them.

There's a beautful girl I see on the subway every morning, she sits in the same car, in aroudn the same window seat, with headphones in not looking at her phone much but always staring out the window. Even if I got a seat next to her (it's always standing room only by the time I get on), there's no in to talk to someone like that.

Years ago, a girl and I kept exchanging glances on a bus, eventually she sat down next to me. The bus was almost completely empty. Of course, I was too much of a bitch to do anything and just got off when my stop came up. But I don't think this is something that happens regularly and you probably shouldn't be hitting on women on the bus.

Absolutely agree (doesn’t just have to be about women). Just feels like riding transportation is a boring event where being around people you could talk to them, not to mention if you get on or off at the same stop, knowing you live near those people so that could be a shared experience where you could easily meet these people to do things with. I saw a documentary about the criminality in my city in the 80s that had a few subway scenes in it. People spontaneously talked to strangers and made friendships there. Some people befriended each other just because they shared the same route every morning. I've shared the same route with some people my age for three years, and I've never talked to them

My experiences have been diverse. For example, at a long ride, I was sitting next to this young woman (my age) and she fell asleep. When we arrived to the station, I whispered that we arrived. She woke up and began talking, eventually getting her insta. The irony is that we actually became friends. I was already married by then, prolly that mattered. But it was strange how easy we became real friends. On other rides, i’ve met drunk girls (younger than me). I tried helping them, and from those two cases, one we were talking all the way to where she lived and the other she even gave me her whatsapp. I usually talk to women instead of men. My wife says it’s because of the way I am, that I don’t like being around guys. She even messes with me about that. But most of the cases it happens like all of you describe… people glued to screens. I don’t use any screen when riding public transportation. For several reasons, one being that I like to enjoy the moment by just seeing people. Also, to be alert from any problems. That also opens a pandora box of people approaching me to talk. Sometimes it’s ok but sometimes it’s people I don’t want to talk to. I don’t like to talk to ugly people, needy people, or certain tourists. I like to talk to people that are different than me, people with real questions, women, or people that carry cool stuff with them.

the morning is a crapshoot, but in the afternoon theres a massive flow of people who all get off. all people who obviously live somewhere in my small city. an easy way right off the bat to have something in common with these people, and even have the benefit of living near each other to theoretically make it easy to meet these people in our free time. but instead i do nothing. i watch as these people leave. i watch as people get picked up by their gf/bf/wife/husband, kids, dog in the car. and i get even more miserable.

Probbably a bit biased, as I work as a conductor for the Czech railways, but I often try to get into into conversations with the passangers to make their trip better or more interesting. Usually when I meet a fellow colleague or a railfan on my train, we start talking about the situation on my train and about anything railway and work related.

As for when I travel as a passanger, the "coupe" compartment design (pic related) usually helps, as when few people are in this relatively small compartment, they get talking much quicker.

Forgot to mention, what always gets people talking are delays. Normally, everyone minds their own business, but when my train is delayed, I go through all my cars and ask (more like shout across the entire carriage) if anyone has any connections they would miss, so that I can talk to the dispatcher to hopefully make the connecting train wait.
Like this, people who share a connection suddenly get a shared identity, they start talking about where they are going and generally are much more likely to start a conversaiton. I have seen many conversations start like this, old grandmas talking with students who are going to the same town and many diffirent unexpected combinations of people.

I've had a very similar experience on a connecting flight from Richmond to NY, I spent the entire flight home talking to a couple of tourists. Even took them sightseeing in my home town a good decade before it got into all the tourist guides.
Might even be that we've met I had a guy shouting when my train to Praha got delayed while visiting for work.

I travel with brompton so usually sit inbetween cars on the little fold out seats to stay with my bike. The other week I was there for 2hrs with a young mother and her cute baby. i listen to bill burr's podcast on my commute, and its funny to hear him give advice to guys who write in about wanting to meet women. he has said multiple times that he would talk to women on the subway in new york when he lived there, usually about the funny/crazy/annoying shit that happens on them, and he meta decent number of women to date on there, but this was back in the 90s/2000s.

compare that to the environment that im listening to the podcast in, on a subway where 90% of people just sit there with headphones on/in, scrolling thru or watching completely useless garbage to pass their half hour commute, where if you dared to attempt to speak to anyone the person would probably be on the subway police text/app to say how threatened they feel. it really blows my mind that we have this subway commute that lasts half an hour where most of us do jack shit, should be a perfect setting to alleviate the boredom by meeting someone, and yet thats frowned upon.

obviously it was a much different time when bill was doing that and giving that advice. when everyone now has their ears plugged with headphones and eyes locked on a phone or computer, theyre actually doing something, unlike back then when people would jsut look ahead or look out the window. now f you ever want to talk to someone, you're taking their attention from something else

i know its really corny to want to meet someone on a subway, especially when you consider that if the person doesnt want to interact with you, theyre now stuck with you for another half hour. but it just really sucks. it should be such a great opportunity to meet people. you see them getting on/off at your home stop so you guys presumably live near each other, you have half an hour doing nothing to get to know them, you could even get their number and try to meet them for the ride back as well, have at least a few hours of conversation just on your work commute in a week.

i dont see how this is any weirder than meeting someone on a dating app, but i guess its completely frowned upon.

I'm not doubting that this bill bur guy "talked to women" successfully, but just in terms of basic odds, the odds are in favor of him frightening a random woman into pretending not to be scared/disgusted by him for a few minutes, and then moving on thinking he's a champion romeo seducer while she spends the next 20 minutes trying to get her heart rate to go back down
