With an ectopic pregnancy for example you have to terminate it waaaaay before you could even induce labor in order to protect the life of the mother, because the fetus is growing in her fillopian tubes.

Also many women have abortions when there is non-viable fetus that will die upon delivery within a few hours because it is much more humane to kill a fetus at 4 months when it is less developed, than to let it develop into a full baby that will only suffer for a few hours after birth, or suffocate as soon as it is enters the world.
