The NHL and NBA teams are planning to move across the Potomac River to a future arena in Alexandria, Va., under an agreement announced on Wednesday by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) and Ted Leonsis, who owns the teams’ ownership group, Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

The new arena would be built next to the Potomac Yard Metro station at the northern end of Alexandria. Both teams now play at Capital One Arena in downtown D.C.

Why does Monumental want to move the teams?
Leonsis has long said he disliked having a mortgage with unfavorable terms at Capital One Arena, calling it “the worst building deal in professional sports.” He also has expressed dissatisfaction with the area around the D.C. arena and has complained about what he said was the District’s lack of investment in the building.

In addition, crime, which has risen in the city in general, also has increased in the Gallery Place area around the arena. As D.C. police staffing in the area has decreased, Monumental has responded by paying off-duty officers to patrol.

Leonsis had suggested he could leave the city when he paid off the mortgage, which could happen as early as 2027.

“It’s not just about money … but you’ve got to talk about the environment. … What is the surrounding area of the venue?” Virginia Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears told WMAL on Wednesday. “If you go to the game and you’re having fun but if you leave the game you’re having to look over your shoulder, that’s an issue.”
