Last night around 12:30 a.m. a St. Louis police cruiser smashed into the front window of an LGBTQ bar in Carondelet. But it was Bar:PM’s co-owner who wound up getting arrested and is currently being held in central booking.
"There were several police officers that jumped him,” says James Pence, who co-owns Bar:PM with Chad Wick, who is currently in police custody.
Pence says the police officer who ran into the bar told him that he had swerved to miss a dog in the middle of South Broadway. Pence says he does have security camera footage of the crash, though he is not making it public at this time.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment this morning. We'll update this post if we hear back.
Pence, who lives above the bar, says that he was getting ready to head to bed as two other people closed up for the night. Suddenly, he felt the whole building shake and ran downstairs.
He came down to find the police SUV in his building and an officer demanding to see his identification.
Pence says he replied: "No you don't. That's a police cruiser in my building. You don't need to see my ID. This is not how this works."
Pence says he was spun around and placed in handcuffs.
Pence’s co-owner, Wick, was taking videos and photos of the police vehicle when, according to Pence, "Three of them (officers) went for him. He raised his arm and they said he hit them."
Pence was eventually taken out of cuffs, but Wick was taken away by police.

In addition to cleaning up the damage, Pence spent much of this morning trying to locate Wick. He later found out that Wick had been taken to the South Patrol police station, then SLU Hospital for medical attention. He was then taken to the North Patrol and finally, around 9 a.m., was at Central Booking. Wick, whose legal name is Chad Morris, was later charged with felony assault. Pence spoke to the RFT as a group of friends and regulars gathered at Bar:PM, which is located at 7109 South Broadway, to help clean up and show support for the owners. Others who were there at the time of the incident say that no medical services or ambulances were ever called to the scene. This is the second high-profile crash involving a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department car in a week. Last Tuesday, a police SUV and another vehicle both ran a stop sign at North Sarah and St. Louis Avenue. The police cruiser ended up being flipped over outside a business located at the intersection.

https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/st-louis-police-file-felony-charge-against-bar-pm-owner-after-suv-crash-41472853 The police probable cause statement associated with the charges against Bar:PM co-owner Chad Morris (who also goes by Chad Wick) alleges that Morris began to "scream obscenities" in the wake of the collision. The officer writes that Morris "struck me hard in the chest with an open hand, causing me to temporarily lose my balance." Morris then allegedly tried to flee into a gangway between the bar and another building, closing a gate on an officer as he did, according to the statement.
Morris is now facing a charge of felony assault on an officer and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
Bar:PM's other co-owner, James Pence, spoke to the RFT this morning and said that it was the police who came at bar staff aggressively, even beyond the fact they drove an SUV into their business.
Pence told the RFT he was upstairs when the entire building shook due to the crash. He came downstairs to an officer demanding to see his identification. When Pence refused, he was spun around and placed in handcuffs.
As for Morris, Pence said that he was filming the crash scene when three officers "went for him."
"He raised his arm and they said he hit them," Pence said.
After Morris was arrested and booked, Judge Rochelle M. Woodiest ordered that he be held without bond.

Most cities have liability protections against damage to private property caused by accidents involving public vehicles being used for government work. Cops virtually never be personally sued unless they behaved improperly. Resisting an illegal arrest is illegal. And cops are virtually always allowed to temporarily detain you as far as courts are concerned if they can come up with even the most paper thin reasoning. Not only will these folks not see a dime, but they'll be out all the money for the bar repairs that insurance doesn't cover and that one dude's going to prison.

>>1248199 >i was never under "lockdown" during covid Wow, what mythical land of unicorns do you hail from? I live in South Carolina and even we had mask mandates and lockdowns for a short time. The governor even ordered a list of "non-essential" businesses to close, even though most people ignored them. Porn stores, for example, were specifically ordered closed and they stayed open anyway and nobody tried to enforce the closures.

>>1248237 most people in my rightwing, redneck shit stain of a state ignored the "mask mandate", with the exception of government offices that absolutely would not accept people walking in with no face covering. (btw, sorry being asked to wear some cotton over your mouth so your disgusting germs didn't fly in people's faces during a pandemic hurt your feelings, snowflake.)
not a single place here was "locked down". nursing homes were strict about who could go in and out and when, but bent over backwards to help people safely see family members.

>>1248241 So... you did go through the same lockdowns I did. Personally, two things I went through during this "non-lockdown" in a red state that you're referring to -
My father in law had a heart attack and it took EMS 20 minutes to get there. He was at home with his daughter (my underage sister in law) and wife. He lived on the same road as the fire department, but due to new COVID protocols, they stopped sending fire response to "non-fire" emergency calls. Meaning, he could have gotten aid in a few minutes, but instead it took 20 and he was dead when they got there.
My 94 year old grandfather who raised me went into ICU in 2021 and due to "COVID protocols" I was not allowed to visit him. He was in ICU for 7 days; I raised absolute hell at the hospital staff and they called the cops to remove me. Family was not allowed to see him before he died. It's something I think about almost every day, although it's only been 3 years so maybe it's still too soon.
I think I'm done with "lockdowns" after what I've seen so far.
