Trump lawyer tries to discredit E Jean Carroll in bizarre exchange during trial

As Alina Habba, Trump’s counsel, hammered on about the writer’s commentary on social media, questioning took an absurd turn

E Jean Carroll’s New York defamation trial against Donald Trump resumed Thursday with the ex-president’s lawyer trying to discredit her on cross-examination with a bizarre dialectic about genitals and intimating that she has loose morals.

“Did you ever post any tweets that could be considered sexually explicit?” Alina Habba, Trump’s lead attorney, asked.

Carroll’s team objected. Kaplan sustained the objection.

As Habba hammered on about the sexual commentary on Carroll’s social media accounts (the former Elle columnist has written about sex and relationships for years), questioning took a turn for the absurd.

“Ms Carroll, what does this say: ‘What CAN be done about the penis? It gets large when you want it small, and stays small when you want it large,’” Habba asked, showing a 2013 tweet. “Those were your words, correct?”

Presidential hopeful Donald Trump insisted Wednesday night that he has what it takes to get Mexico to build a wall along the U.S. border.

“We’re going to do a wall; we’re going to have a big, fat beautiful door on the wall; we’re going to have people come in, but they’re going to come in legally,” Trump said at the third Republican debate, hosted by CNBC.

“Mexico’s going to pay for the wall,” he said. “I love the Mexican people; I respect the Mexican leaders, but their leaders are much sharper, much smarter and more cunning than our leader.”

For years, the issue has divided anti-immigrant conservative activists from business-oriented Republicans and the fast-growing Hispanic constituency, from which the GOP needs more votes to win presidential elections.

But Trump widened that divide — and began his rise to the top of Republican polls with hot rhetoric in his presidential announcement speech about who was crossing America’s southern border.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” he declared in June. “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

The latest Monmouth University poll — released Monday — showed Ben Carson leading the field in Iowa by double digits, while Trump held tight in second place.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday took aim at former President Trump over his “failure” to make Mexico pay for the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

DeSantis said Trump, the 2024 presidential GOP front-runner, was “rationalizing that failure” by claiming he had no way to make Mexico pay.

“I do think when he’s saying things, like in Iowa the other day that well, you know, he couldn’t follow his campaign promise to have Mexico … pay for the border wall because there was, quote, no legal mechanism he could have used to have Mexico pay,” DeSantis said during an interview on The Hill on NewsNation. “He’s rationalizing that failure.”

“The problem is that was his main campaign promise,” DeSantis said. “I was at the rallies. It was fun. Everyone was cheering that.”

DeSantis suggested the former president was making “excuses” about Mexico not contributing funding and pledged to follow through on that campaign promise if he becomes president.

“When he’s saying that he couldn’t get the job done, look, I wanted to send the message: I will get the job done. I’m not going to make excuses,” the governor said. “We’re done with the excuses. We’ve got to figure out a way to do it.”

“And I will deal with the border. I’ll have the wall,” he continued. “We’ll take on the drug cartels, which is really what should have happened a long time ago.”
DeSantis laid out his plan to make Mexico pay, claiming Trump could have imposed certain fees.

“There actually was a way he could have done that. He could have imposed fees,” he said. “And I will do this as president.”

“You could have imposed fees on the remittances that people send to foreign countries, Mexico included,” he added. “That would raise millions of dollars.”

DeSantis, who has fallen in the polls, has increased his attacks on Trump, his chief rival in the 2024 GOP primary — while touting his own competency at achieving policy goals.
