Well, the issue isn't that it was a corporate town. The issue is that they spoke out against DeSantis. They paid all of the upkeep cost of the lands and have been ever since 1976. It was never a problem for him or the Florida voters before they disagreed publicly with some of his initiatives. Also, the OP isn't even correct. The district isn't dissolved. Disney still maintains control of the special district - DeSantis just overhauled the board and replaced it with his own people. He has the legal right to do so but to pretend that any of this has to do with DeSantis's genuine concerns about Disney's operations is moronic. Its payback for speaking out against him and, unfortunately for Disney, he has the legal power to do so. Its weird how conservatives can't just admit that.

This is just a deflection away from the argument. It doesn't matter what the content of the legislation was or what Disney's problem with it was. Disney had operated that special district since 1976 and DeSantis nor the Florida voters ever had an issue with it. After Disney spoke out against DeSantis's policies he decided to wage war against them by using his power as governor to fuck with their special district. This is the course of events. Legally, DeSantis has every right to do what he did. He's the governor. I just think its so chicken shit that conservatives can't just admit that this is what happened. One, a special district isn't a special tax status that Disney makes money off of. Disney is financially responsible for all of the maintenance, development and emergency services of said district. It would be financially cheaper for them to lay that cost on the state of Florida but they don't do it because it allows them to develop the land minus any red tape. Two, the timeline is so simple a small child could understand it. Disney ran the special district since 1976 without issue. One day, they sad a bad thing about DeSantis. The next day, DeSantis threatens to dissolve their special district for saying bad thing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist. All it takes is someone whose brain isn't melted by partisan politics.

The Reedy Creek Improvement District was dissolved in 2023, and the original five-member Board of Supervisors controlled by the Walt Disney Company were replaced by desantis at the same time. It is now the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and is *quite literally* under new management

My guess is that the cost of this upkeep is minimal in comparison to the autonomy it affords them. They don't have to rely on the city for maintenance. They can do everything themselves with far more resources at hand. The special district allows them to keep all of their handling of the district in house. I assume that makes their operations that much easier when they can essentially skip miles of red tape. Additionally, its my understanding that Disney has invested in incredible amount of money in infrastructure and development during its time as overseer of the special district. From their statements on the matter it kind of seems like they resent the possibility of basically funding and maintaining this area then just handing over the fruits of all of their labor that they've been curating since the 1970s back to the state of Florida. Florida, after all, hasn't paid for any of it. Disney has. I'm not making an argument either way. I'm just trying to characterize Disney's position.
