In Latvia, citizens will be fined for watching Russian TV channels

No.784881 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Prior to the adoption of the amendments, the law provided for a ban on the illegal use of services for commercial purposes - that is, it was aimed at “clandestine” satellite broadcasting operators. Now it is forbidden to use their services, including for personal purposes, without the intention of making a profit.

The developers of the bill note that at the moment there is no penalty for using such illegal systems for individuals. However, if the number of subscribers to illegal services cannot be reduced, administrative liability for individuals may be introduced.

The authors of the law note that in 2018, 62,000 households used the services of illegal television. The Society "For Legal Content" plans to conduct an information campaign at its own expense in order to reduce the number of illegal connections by 6,000 and to reduce the number of households justifying piracy by 4,400, according to the bill.
