>>1769774Go out and start IDing things as practice, but don't actually eat anything until after a year or so of experience. Use field guides for your local area and do plenty of research online. If you end up really enjoying it, join a mushroom club and an experienced mushroom picker will help you tremendously. Learn how to make spore prints and dissect caps.
In the meantime, you can look for some mushrooms that are very distinctive, such as morels. This is only my first season mushroom picking but I believe anything in the Morchella genus is a safe bet for anybody as long as you dont confuse a Gyromitra for them
