This is a general rule. There's plenty of edible mushrooms that grow on plenty of things, but you need to ID them properly and that can be hard

Amazingly, these are growing about 50 yards from my garage. The emerald ash borer has swept through my neck of the woods and we've got loads of dead ash trees all over so I'm sure there are more to be found.

Just Morels, they pop up so late here. There aren't many other decent edible shrooms in Central South Dakota, at least varieties that are easily identifiable. I miss living in the PNW and being able to find chanterelles, boletes, hedgehogs, oysters, chicken of the woods, all with relative ease and confidence and a much longer foraging season.

I'm a big fan of Spearfish canyon. There are some great areas around Custer as well. Just avoid Mt Rushmore, Rapid City and Deadwood and you'll probably be good.

That's because 4chan strips Exif data. Same data contains rotational alignment. There is a very simple way of fixing it though. Rotate the picture, edit it in any way -- like dropping a small white dot somewhere with mspaint -- and then save it as a new picture. It should keep the alignment now.

Go out and start IDing things as practice, but don't actually eat anything until after a year or so of experience. Use field guides for your local area and do plenty of research online. If you end up really enjoying it, join a mushroom club and an experienced mushroom picker will help you tremendously. Learn how to make spore prints and dissect caps.

In the meantime, you can look for some mushrooms that are very distinctive, such as morels. This is only my first season mushroom picking but I believe anything in the Morchella genus is a safe bet for anybody as long as you dont confuse a Gyromitra for them

Almost forgot, morels are only safe to eat after cooking I believe. This should go for any mushroom you plan to eat from the wild. And also there's a closely related genus of mushrooms called Verpa, and it's under debate whether or not they're poisonous but they should be easy to tell apart from a morel if you familiarize yourself with them

Figure out what grows in your area and only eat the foolproof ones. Morels, chanterelles, and chicken of the woods are all very distinct from any toxic lookalikes. Also, get a field guide. I can’t recommend because they tend to be region specific but I will say I’m not a fan of the Audubon society book. Lastly, when in doubt do NOT throw it out. Take it home, take prints, make a post on mushroom observer, and get an ID. Once you’ve IDed something once you’ll never forget it. Just don’t eat anything you’re unsure of and you’ll be fine. Pretty much all poisonings in this country are retards, children, and southeast Asians mistaking local mushies for edible ones that grow back home.

these lbms are tough to ID even when they're right in front of you. probably need gill shots, and information about textures, smells, fragility of cap, measurements etc. for species level i wouldn't be surprised if you needed microscopy.
however my guess would be psathyrella or panaeolus species.

I mean, there are a few species called "chicken of the woods." This is the cincinnatus variation. Sulphureus is the other common one. The cincinnatus has a lighter coloration. Usually white edges and salmon interior. Underside is white unlike sulphureus which has a yellow underside. Most people just call any orange-ish shelf polypore chicken of the woods thinking it's all the same species.

"Chicken of the woods" are all in the Laetiporus genus. There are different "species" in that genus. For example Laetiporus huroniensis is indistinguishable from Laetiporus Sulphureus. But Laetiporus huroniensis is poisonous to about 10% of the population. This is why I only forage the Cincinnatus species. It is different than Sulphureus so I can be sure it's not the potentially poisonous Laetiporus huroniensis

It grows on the same hardwood as Laetiporus Sulphureus. It's the reason that Chicken of the woods has been a "mild risk" mushroom for so long. It has a poisonous cousin that it interbreeds with. Cincinnatus is the only safe chicken of the woods

I recently found some sulphureus for the first time, on an oak. The texture was very fine but I was rather disappointed with the taste; it was mild with a slight sourness and also starchiness that left the tip of my tongue feeling dry. Nothing resembling chicken (or lobster as some say) which the many choice russulas beats it at. I even found the giant polypore to be much more tastier and similar tasting to steak. Maybe it was just this particular example, but it was young, clean and tender.

I live in NW Kentucky, non-native so I don't know the land too well. I just drove around chasing the Ohio River yesterdau and found an area that looked like flooded frequently. Closest tributaries to me I know of are Tradewater River and the Wabash, but the Wabash is in IN and ovoids aren't really known for showing up there so I'll probably just stick with Tradewater.

definitely free - see that "bald" ring around the stem. i'd guess the area they're in had trees some years ago and they're growing from buried wood or wood chips.
do the gills smell of radishes?
anyway pluteus petasatus is my guess, but it could be a couple of pluteus species. microscopy would confirm for sure. probably edible but don't eat them based on my id.
i wouldn't be too worried about kids provided they aren't prone to eating random shit. maybe kids in general are, i dunno.

no worries. sweeping statements aren't great in mycology, but the genera with gills that go from white to pink are relatively safe. entoloma, pluteus, volvariella, i don't know of any species considered seriously deadly. mostly shit your brains out stuff. just know that observing that colour change is critical.

I don't have any good pictures, but I've been growing brown, yellow, and blue tree oysters from a local starter kits. They were just grow bags with sawdust and the mycelium pre-grown surrounded by a burlap sack. All I really had to do was to cut a slit into the sack and keep everything moist. The mushrooms have been coming up, and the first sack (brown tree oyster) has already been harvested.
Anyways, I had the idea to buy a manure and compost mixture and some hay, go to a shady, moist stretch of the woods, and make a little mushroom patch. I found a nice and recessed spot next to some mossy logs, laid down the compost/manure mixture, spread mycelium-sawdust from the grow bag, and covered it with some hay that I watered. Do you guys think this will bear any fruit? I also got a few logs from a somewhat recently felled plot of land and made some pseudo-plugs with wet mycelium sawdust and crisco.

Also, the burlap on my growing kits has been getting moldy. Should I still go for a second set, or just add more mycelium to the mushroom patch? I have no idea what impact the mold will have on the mushrooms.

Get a good field guide for your area and learn about local species. Learn what features are typical of a given genus - this will help you have an idea even if you find something unfamiliar. Spend as much time looking at actual specimens as you can, and observing properties like cap texture, smells, the way the flesh breaks, since these things are tough to describe with words.
After you spend time looking at them closely you'll develop a feel for things and ID gets easier.
Probably the most important features are spore colour, gill attachment to the stem and presence of veils. That alone isn't enough for ID though.

Thought I found some oysters at work today, but after I got up close I realized they weren't and I have no idea what it is.

you can clone or take mycelium from wild specimens, but it's a lengthy process and you're not guaranteed a good strain for cultivation
i've also heard people clone from shop-bought fungi. probably a good choice but you'll need good equipment for keeping a sterile working environment and agar plates.

certainly coprinoid - the gills appear to be deliquescing, and that's probably all we can know without microscopy. if i really had to call it i'd say coprinellus is the genus on account of the granular cap. to my knowledge there's no way to narrow it down further from pictures alone.
fortunately this is probably a sign of high quality soil, and the fungi is making more nutrients available to your plant.

Is there any real way to clone/grow from spores without Agar? I'm trying to figure out a way I can start growing mushrooms for food in a long term way if SHTF and it seems like to keep a steady crop you need agar at some point. Anyone have any ideas?

it gets a little complicated, but you can start a culture by just dumping viable spores on a substrate. two spores combine and that's when genetic material gets swapped around, so the resulting culture might be quite different from what produced the spores. that's why cloning is preferred for maintaining a consistent culture.
cloning has its disadvantages too, namely that the strain will eventually die of old age. they've got good techniques to make them last as long as possible, though.
in a SHTF scenario you'd be happy to have anything i suppose, so if agar wasn't available i'd find some nice wild specimens, harvest spores, dump into a reasonably sterile substrate and hope for the best. with enough tries you should get a good culture.

straw is probably ideal in SHTF because you can get it sterile enough with only regular boiling. wood and sawdust need to be completely sterilised in a pressure cooker/autoclave. well, not strictly true - it's possible to use sawdust without complete sterilisation but your odds aren't great because of the high contamination risk. the downside of straw is not as many species will grow on it.
another strategy to consider would be inoculating wooden logs, which don't need sterilisation if they're reasonably fresh. i'm not sure how easy it'd be to inoculate them with just spores though.

I found some angels wings (pleurocebella porrigens) supposedly they are edible but I've read that there's been an event where a bunch of old Japanese dudes with kidney issues ate some and died. Apparently they have some toxin that normally gets filtered out by your kidneys, so these guys kidneys just didn't work. I have no kidney issues, do you guys think I should eat them?

the following is true for any species, read a lot about its descriptions from multiple sources. find out what you can about similar species.
then, spend a good amount of time actually looking at real specimens. and i mean looking, smelling, feeling textures, possibly tasting. not only the one you want, but lookalikes too. after a while you'll gain "vision" for that group of species and then it won't be difficult.
all of that said i personally can't confirm if what anon found is what he said it is. you're probably better off buying/growing if you want to party.

Why bother posting at all? Further, though this isn't really a problem with oyster lookalikes that I know of, there are poisonous mushrooms out there where, if you eat them, you are a dead man walking by the time you start showing any symptoms.

i've actually never eaten it since they don't grow locally, but i'll tell you what i've heard. if it's still very young and soft you could cook them like other mushrooms - this one looks too big for that. typically the tougher ones are prepared as a tea from long soaking, or made into a tincture. i think you can dry and powder them too.
