Hacking type shitbeaters with a 1/4" spine are fine for murdering trees, making kindling, looking cool and fighting bears, but a fine edged cutter has a lot of uses. Doesn't have to be big, heck most of the 18-19th century explorers, trappers and cattlemen around the world carried something about 5-6" long that was basically a repurposed butchers knife.
