Stanfields makes great wool that is light. You can get it from david morgan in the us. It isnt merino, but can last a lot longer since merino is some of thd lowest micron wool thread out there.
I use fleece for long johns, darn tough military wool for socks, and switch between wool and fleece for a midlayer.
Maybe not for an expedition, but wool with enough lanolin is underrated as an outerlayer. Some of the swanndris, parsons wool, lester river/empire wool, weather wool, townsends wool can be way more comfortable than a coat, be quiet, last long, and do a better job regulating body temp.
