Which area in the UK would you say is realistically best for someone who wants to retreat from the world and become self-sufficient? Grow as much of your own food as possible, generate energy for yourself if you can and be as far away from civilisation as possible?
Welsh valleys seem great for remoteness and cheap land, but you're not growing much or getting much sunlight for solar. Same with the Scottish Highlands. East Anglia sorts food/solar/wind energy but is expensive.
I'm currently in Wiltshire but what was lovely open countryside is now being destroyed for more copy paste new builds and it's becoming awful.
