Also, you can day-hike off-trail all you want, that's actually more fun than trail hiking (for me). If you don't want to have a bad time, make sure you practice skills, just get hold of the basics. Any /out/ book will do, survival manuals or what-not.
And prepare your camp when there's still light, not like me when it's 2 hours after sun-down.
Practice your tent-making, so that you aren't pissed by it. All shows seem to portray the tent-builder as an irritated arsehole, but it's easy if you just practice a little.
Overnight and weekend are (for me) identical things: Set off on Saturday morning, get back Sunday evening. Start making fires, learn that. When you're out and have time on your hands, read up on what could be done better. Reassess, review, repack. That's the motto :-)
tl;dr: Learn the basics, after first trips learn what you missed /out/. And tie your shoes, pic related.
