AZ Mountain Lion season is year round. If you must kill a bear or mountain lion you must notify a ranger so it can be tested for rabies. If your somewhere a firearm is prohibited you could face fines.

Call the DoW and tell them exactly what happened, when and where. As long as you were justified in your actions (ie. "A bear tried to eat me and I had to shoot it; here are the bite marks on my leg for proof" and not "I saw a bear 50 yards away from my camp and got scared so I shot it") and you tell the truth, the chances of any negative consequences are minimal.

And for what it's worth you'll probably get a hell of a lot MORE scrutiny during the off season than the hunting season because poachers love to kill shit and then claim self-defense.

Bears won't fight you unless you are stupid. Even in this case, statistics show that bear spray give you more chance of ending the day unarmed than guns. That being said, even with a rifle and spray, you don't want to fight bears. It's easy to prevent them from coming after you and it's what you should do.

Felines don't show before they charges so it's more a problem.

Back in the day, a couple of guys I worked with were deer hunting here in Michigan and came across a freshly dead and obviously shot elk, which someone had probably thought was a big deer and upon discovering they had in fact shot an elk, ran off.

They reported it to the DNR and a week later, two DNR officers showed up at both their houses and requested (note; did not demand, though they could have with a court order) their rifles to do ballistic tests on them.

The guys handed them over and a few days later, their rifles were returned and they never heard anything from the DNR about it again.

If using a hammock in cold weather, would it be a good idea to heat up some rocks in your fire then place them under the hammock? Assuming you string the hammock up just high enough so you don't burn your hammock or you. Or are there some other risks I'm not thinking of here?

Black bears are the only bears you'll encounter. Luck of the draw dictates whether you have a typical bitch ass black bear or one that is used to being "aww look at da beeeaaar" from hippies and is brave enough to bother you.

If it's a bitch ass black bear you can hoot and holler and it'll leave you alone. If it's a little braver, and doesn't leave from that then it won't fight to the death with you. You might get bit but typical black bear advice is to fight it. If you can't get a gun I suggest bringing a hatchet or big knife innawoods just to give yourself defensive capacity. Bear mace weighs nearly nothing so pack that if you'd like to as well. That will also scare off most hobos since hobos, like bears, would rather not die.

I want to practice navigational skills in my local desert, but do to it being summer I would prefer to do it at night. Axes should usually have concave bevels, so if yours is flat ground you might want to file it back a bit. Most people use sharpening pucks instead of bench stones, but I also use the wet/dry sandpaper on a mouse pad method that's normally for convex ground knives.

Check out the "Ax to Grind" book from the forest service, it has an entire chapter on sharpening.

Yeah, basically. Start with the day hike and already practice skills like fire-making or tinder collecting.
Also, you can day-hike off-trail all you want, that's actually more fun than trail hiking (for me). If you don't want to have a bad time, make sure you practice skills, just get hold of the basics. Any /out/ book will do, survival manuals or what-not.

And prepare your camp when there's still light, not like me when it's 2 hours after sun-down.

Practice your tent-making, so that you aren't pissed by it. All shows seem to portray the tent-builder as an irritated arsehole, but it's easy if you just practice a little.

Overnight and weekend are (for me) identical things: Set off on Saturday morning, get back Sunday evening. Start making fires, learn that. When you're out and have time on your hands, read up on what could be done better. Reassess, review, repack. That's the motto :-)

tl;dr: Learn the basics, after first trips learn what you missed /out/. And tie your shoes, pic related.

Just get a pamphlet at your local state park; it's really not that hard and basically boils down to "don't surprise bears and don't smell like food at night".

Factory finishes can leave blisters if you use your axe all day long without gloves.
If you remove the factory finish, which is the equivalent of varnish you'll avoid getting blisters. Oiling it does the same thing the varnish was supposed to, which is to keep water out of the handle/prevent moisture from leeching out and deforming the wooden handle and ruining the fitment of the handle to the head.

And somebody is probably going to reply to this going "man up and grow some callouses", but I'm a weightlifter and I have thick callouses on my palm, just not in the center of my palm which is where I can feel blisters would form when I use my hatchet.

Nothing. there is simply not much need to bring anything, safe for two options. a) winter camping with hot tent and b) canoe trip where weight does not count as much and you have a camp fire all night. Fore those settings a folding saw and a boys axe will do fine.

Nothing formal, as it all depends on how you pack, but most manufacturers generally break it down to:

<40 liters: daypack

40-55 liters: 1-3 days "weekend pack"

60-75 liters: 1 week-ish "Extended Use" packs

80 liters and up: Expedition packs

But these are suggestions, not rules. How you pack, how long you go for, how often you resupply will affect all that.

Figure out how much stuff you'll bring and then buy an appropriately sized pack.

If you don't have a car then you can walk from the metrorail airport station or the 42A and it will drop you off almost in front of the store. Depends a bit who you are and where you are going. In general a good nights sleep is gold, so make sure your sleeping mat and bag are comfortable.

Sun screen and insect repellent are good to have. I personally like to bring a good book, kick back, read a bit and enjoy my time. If you are going only for a weekend and with friends you might won't need that. might bring a little daypack and a water bottle so you can do excursions. If you are in a warm climate and with water, swim shorts are a must.

Ok, 3 season would be much lighter, but if you need 4 season try the exped ultralite 700, M should fit you. Thats a light 4s bag, but will still come in at around 1.0kg, at least it packs down really small.
If you need even more warmth, get a lite 900 model.
Now those are from Switzerland, if you can't find them try Western Mountaineering.

This is not how it works, you don't store a down sleeping bag over prolonged periods of time in a small compression bag, you'd pretty much ruin the bag. Also, you will need a sleeping mat rated for the temperature range you got. Again, Exped down mats are suitable of 4 season and pack down small.

For beginner camping in the woods, the San Bernardino mountains and the San Jacintos have a number of good sites close to great wilderness and aren't overpopulated with campers. I recommend Green Valley campground in particular. Also there are a few great ones in the Laguna and Cuyumaca mountains near SD. Especially Laguna meadow. Hikes are easier but in the Laguna mountains, weather can be more unpredictable and its arguably easier to get lost because the meadow is so big and hard to navigate.

What? A kukri is (to some) a replacement for a hatchet.

You'd typically take a small fixed blade like a mora for detail stuff, and something to process firewood like a hatchet/axe (or a kukri if that's what you're into)

Yes. Here's your options. Find a store that sells one. Kelty had a nice one. Or order something that you may send back. Kind of like ordering never tried brand of shoes online. Most all externals are really adjustable so you have a ton of room to get it dialed in. Shoot for the lightest you can find. Your probably going to be in the 6 to 8 pound range though. And if you can get one without the dedicated insulated water bottle pocket on the top, do that. A lot of bags had that for a while and it is neat until you start carrying bladders or roll up bottles to save weight. Then it's just a waste.

Probably for the attachment of external pouches, which have a matching male version of the plastic mounting bracket/buckle(?) and which are turned 90* and snap onto the female part.

I have a "Fieldline" brand (from Sportsman's Guide) Realtree camo backpack and fannypack I bought X years back for hunting, which have similar pouch mounting points on the shoulder straps, but the two pouches that were included are too small for my use (great packs, otherwise).

You're probably better off getting a backpack with the far more common MOLLE system, as pouches with that particular plastic mounting bracket/buckle may become unavailable, if the manufacturer goes out of business or simply drops the product line.

It's my pack that I've used for the last 2 years as my assault pack when I'm not wearing a plate carrier, since my Falcon II tends to slip when just wearing a jacket, the middle strap that keeps that from happening sadly broke.

The backpack doesn't have any additional pouches as far as I know since it's mil-tec shit (which actually holds up surprisingly well). I always figured it's for looping your bedroll or sleeping back's straps through and then fastening them, but they always slack a lot due to the lid after that. Oh well, maybe it's just mil-tec brand gear being shitty at anything that isn't a sturdy metal frame.

Tarptent Contrail, Pennystove, Titanium Mug, Spork, lightweight noname summer sleeping bag, Exped UL Synmat. depends highly on the climate of your are. Make sure you got excellent padded gloves, good padded shorts and cycling jacket (Gore).

Nope. It's at least civil trespassing, which means you can be removed by the police and you can have charges pressed against you by the landowner (the state of NY or the power company, depending).

However, being power lines that are obvious places you don't belong and also likely to have several "no trespassing" signs along the way, you are likely to have the book thrown at you for criminal trespassing, which can get you arrested and brought to court, and then fined, put on probation, and/or potential jail time.

The thing is, you're most likely to get away with it without incident or bother because nobody gives a fuck, but if you stumble upon police or a work crew you might have a bad time. Also it depends what you're doing, just walking and you might be fine, as opposed to dirtbiking or something

If you're riding a 4wheeler/bike or whatever, that's another story, but chances are the worst that would happen is you might get yelled at to stay off the trail by any work crews you see.

tl;dr I'd be careful, it's usually trespassing, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just bug out if you see anybody.

Public land. Guess it's not much different than hiking. It's about half a mile to the shore and there should always be plenty of fishers on the water if I go during the day.

Compass, sunscreen, permethrin for ticks, pocket knife, lighter, walking stick, water bottle.

I assume they carried canned food and stole shit (ie kill the occasional sheep on a farm they pass through, or rob a store). probably knew a bit about eating plants, the aboriginal ones especially. keep in mind though most bushranges were in victoria ie the most densely populated part of australia, so its not like they were trekking for weeks on end through bush. they probably went through/past a town every couple of days, and could pick shit up there if they wanted

Eh, I'd limit that to the trail. You don't need technical gear to do the mountaineers route but you'd probably benefit from something sturdier than moabs (with all due respect to moabs, they're pretty awesome shoes).

Anza Borrego is my favorite place on earth. It's fucking enormous and there's tons of places to go. Most people don't venture outside of the well known tourist areas. Little Blair Valley is pretty well known but doesn't see a whole lot of people.

Cleveland National Forest also has some sick places to camp. Fry Creek is my personal favorite.
