The lettuce, what time of year did you pick them, or pluck leaves off. Lettuces will taste like garbage even before they go to seed.
What type of lettuce was it? Usually home grown lettuce even bib, head or romaine will have a very strong taste. We don't grow underground here as we live on slate. We do slightly raised beds with really good compost from new york state. It gets addictive, originally just had the standard tomatoes etc. I've not ripped up most of our lawns to put gardens it. Love every minute of it
