Ah, that could be it then. Heat mats are fairly cheap and you really only need to use them during germination time. So, the length of time used isn't long, but they increase seed germination success quite a bit and reduce germination time by a great deal. You can DIY various methods for heating them too. For instance you can get a big cardboard box, set your seedling tray on it, and put a light bulb inside the box. The light will warm the bottom of the tray. Just cut a vent hole you can open/close in case it gets too hot.

any way to push flowers, like really push them. Usually start imatiens (dont ask, I hate them) for my mother late February. didn't this year figured we would just buy them but I want to try anyway. Is there a way I can sprout them now and push them hard to get them hardened off enough for a mothers day planting?

For oriental poppies? Online temps seem really varied for some reason. However, all are lower than normal vegetable temps. I'm seeing 55F, 60-68F, and 70F. I'm seeing more results for 65-70F than anything else. If you have a thermometer, I suggest resting it near the trays so you know what the ambient room temp is. Then you can decide if you need to add heat or actually reduce the temps.

Impatiens sp? Which type? Some require a double dormancy period. Something you'd not have time to do before mother's day. That's a cold + moist period 60-90 days then a warm + moist period 60-90 days then another cold + moist period 60-90 days. It can be really wonky for some species like that (Jewelweed, Impatiens capensis). Which is why most are planted in the fall for spring growing. Thus, knowing which species you have will help a lot. Of course if there's instructions on the packet that will help a lot too. It will depend on those instructions and the species type to know what you may be able to speed up. For Impatiens walleriana is similar. also they all require light to germinate so they are surface sown and/or extremely shallow when sprinkling the seeds out.

Regardless, once sprouted, it is all about good light, proper temps, proper watering, and proper soil fertility.

Now, if the species is Impatiens walleriana, which you don't have time for, you can substitute them for Periwinkle (Vinca rosea) which looks very similar and doesn't require the double dormancy period. See this image for what they look like. To germinate Vinca rosea you cover them with 1/4 inch soil, pat it down so no light gets to them or they will not germinate. Meaning you'll need to wrap up the container and use a black pot to prevent light from getting to the seeds. They should take about 2 weeks to germinate. You'll need to keep the seeds warm too.

Weather was good on the weekend so I finally got around to doing my interspecies grafting experiments. Cut down three large and two small hawthorns, and rind grafted a mixture of pears (Stinking Bishop, Bastard Sack, Green Pear of Yair, Judge Amphlett & Black Pear of Worcester). No idea if they will be compatible, I know that only some pears can be grafted successfully onto the much more closely related quince roots. It is supposedly possible to do and I've seen pictures purporting to be pears on hawthorn roots.

I also grafted some Whitty Pears (sorbus domestica), but whether these will survive is even more doubtful.

I will have about 500l of cider this fall and just think about burning some into hard stuff for shit and giggles.
What would be ok tier distillery? Would a small 3l do it working with 60l cider or would you go for a 10l+?

I actually know how to distill but those where either really large batches of 200l+ or really small batches of 1l for demonstration...

Hey I got a question for you. Two Agrobrite T5 4ft 4bulb lights. One I have is the "designer" series, got it cheap cause the place was going out of business. The other is the standard white one. Both have the exact same bulbs and brand and the lights are exactly the same other than the finish. The white one I swear is a greener color than the designer one. Any clue what could get going on?

It's all how much time you have on your hands. You could use the 3l, but the time to run through the full 60l of cider would take forever. I would look at a 11-18l still, that will afford you the ability to make your cuts and won't require you nanny the hell out of it while it's running like a small boiler would need.

Well it would be DIY project over a few weekends for my enjoyment and teaching my kids how nature works at the same time.
So I guess I go for a large 15l pot for the good stuff and get a small 2l for the kids to show and tell basics of biology and chemistry as it happens.

So long as it fits the thread, of course. There's been a few builders of shelving units for housing their starts and trays posting in these threads. Most people go to /diy/ and /ck/ for things plainly related to that.

Lucky. I live in a temperate rainforest. It sometimes gets down to -40F in winter and as hot as 105F in summer with 100% humidity most of the time. The past few years has been weird though. Like winter decided to take a break. No snow to speak of, animals not migrating, flowers and trees blooming out of season etc. I grew up with 4 feet snowfall, 12 feet snow drifts, and camping out in ice shacks to fish every winter.

I'm talking, if I had literal rows of repellent herbs and flowers inter-planted with my regular crops such as radishes and lettuce, would that be in close enough proximity to reduce the risk of pests?

Look through the archives, we have been over pepper growing a million times. Just search for "pepper".

But as you are asking for Habaneros specifically, get fuckhuge pots or better, put them in a bed or large planter. Habaneros fare much better with lots,of root space in my experience. They grow bigger, better and yield exceptionally better.

The fruit is about 1.5" in diameter and the trees never need to be trimmed or thinned. They are extremely prolific, but the fruit ripens at different times. Thankfully, the fruit ripens off the tree, so wind tossed stuff ripens in a day or so. They freeze well so I can keep freezing them until I have a huge batch to make into wine, jams/jellies, and the like. They taste really good and are peach colored for the most part.

These are actually a wild cultivar "Prunus americana". The are horrifically prolific producers of saplings. If I don't mow the orchard enough new trees can grow 2-4 feet in almost no time at all in the summer. The term, "plum thicket" is very apt. As such they are very invasive.

Whenever I germinated mine in a ziploc bag, they had a better and quicker germination rate than in the trays with heat pad and dome. They germinate in about 2-3 days in a ziploc bag, with a damp cloth, directly under a strong light. It is actually quite amazing. However, once I have tons and tons of seeds to waste I started using the trays exclusively since it takes up less room. I just start them earlier and use 3 seeds per cell then thin to 1 plant.

I have a peace lilly at home that sits inside a closed window sill (no direct sunlight). It never blooms or grows. Had it for 3 years. The first year I had it, it bloomed once with very small flowers. The leaves are often thin and small and slowly turn a dark rotting green and fall limp.

I've gone through a few grow methods with it and can't figure the damn plant out. I've checked its water content. Tried over watering. Tried underwatering. Tried keeping the soil just partially moist. I've added grow feed. I've gone a whole year without feeding it at all. I've changed the soil twice (most recently last week) with no results. It is still growing small leaves and then going dark green and wilting within just a few weeks of growth.

I see this plant in restaurants and in nurseries all the time with huge broad leaves, dark but vibrant green leaves, and huge white flowers. WTF am I doing wrong?

It is both. They sucker from the roots faster than seedlings, but the sheer number of seeds that end up on the ground is so high that at the end of the season it looks like they are fallen leaves. Thus, even though they have seriously low germination rates for the seeds, there's still a ton and they still grow like made. I've made like $5k just selling them for $10 each. Evidently, they make excellent rootstock for the domesticated plum cultivars. Yes, they are also great for making wind breaks. They also feed my flock of chickens quite well.

For repotting or for new herbs? Some mints, thyme, tarragon, watercress, and most salad greens are pretty easy to grow in shady areas like window sills. For repotting just dump them out as one piece of soil into the hole. If the roots are compacted and root bound, gently loosen them up with little damage.

Electric fencing. You only need to have 1 strand of wire at their nose height. They will sniff it and get zapped. From then on it is a psychological barrier to them. If you don't want to use that, you can use a mulch they don't like. For instance I had to use gravel in my pineapple plant and banana plant pots to keep them out. Large pieces of wood mulch, 3-4 inches deep should also work for open ground in a garden. Just rake it back when you need to work the ground and try not to mix it into the soil.

They won't bloom in shade or low light,. It needs some bright indirect sunlight for most of the day. To harden it off to the far brighter indirect sunlight, start with 2 hours of bright indirect sunlight each day and go up from there after a few days until it has a longtime in the sun. Just watch for sun scald, which means it gets too much sun too quickly. Direct sunlight will certainly sun scaled it so be careful.

A rainy Zone 5. They do well in very cold areas where it can get -20F for a few nights in a week. That cultivar of plum doesn't like drought areas and won't survive fires like some trees are able to do. So, they are better suited for east of the Rockies. If they are grown in a thicket or thicket row, they don't tend to grow very high. If they are a single tree in an open area they will grow to about 15 feet max. They can't tolerate light competition very well so shady areas are out of the question.

peace lillies are bitchy as all get out, imo. The only ones I've ever seen really thrive turned out to be living in massive squirming knots of millipedes. I'm not a huge fan of my cherry plums, I find the fruit quality to be very mixed with some trees much better than others. My parents like them so they get a bunch, and the rest rot on the ground. They were planted by the previous land owner, I would 100% have planted damsons instead if i had the choice.

Wind damage causes many to rot on the tree. Falling to the ground bruises them causing them to rot. You need to be there 3-4 times a day to harvest things that drop so you can freeze them. They rot within a few hours. It can be frustrating some years when the weather is bad and windy all the time.

For furry animals use an electric fence. For insects there's nothing you can do except run interference, if you don't have it under insect cloth. Companion planting helps confuse them so there's no oasis with only their plant type to eat. For aphids, just blast them with water.

Never doubt the power of introducing predators to control insects.
At the local feed store here, you can order ladybugs and mantises to introduce to your garden.
Also, diatomaceous earth stops bugs well. If I get a case of ants guarding aphids, I just keep a ring of fresh DE around the plant stalk so ants can't climb up, and the ladybugs can move in to eat the aphids. Gotta be careful with it, because it's bad for beneficial bugs too.

Need to see if anyone can figure something out by sight - pic related is a bok-choy that I'm doing in hydroponic cups. I'm pretty sure it's hybridized with something, but no idea what. The leaves are coming out broader, flatter, and have little hairy growths on them, similar to how a zucchini plant leaf feels. The stalks are less wide, and aren't as stark white in color as compared to normal.

Next post shows some of the normal plants that came from the same seed set, and are growing what you'd expect.

Any idea what is going on here? Is there any sort of bok-choy hybrid that would make them unsafe to eat? Any help appreciated.

We started off saving the tops to drinks that my wife gets at a shop across the street. We ran out of those though, and ended up ordering a set of like 250ea 16oz cups with clear lids off of Amazon, and we just cut the hole where the straw goes for the net cups in the top with a knife or razor. We keep the seedlings in the rock wool cubes they were started in and just move the whole thing into the net cup once the roots are long enough to sit in a permanent cup.

Ideally though, we'd like to get opaque lids to keep the light from getting to the nutrient solution, but can't find just flat, fountain drink style lids in black. (Searching for black drink cup lids just yields coffee cup lids.) That way the lids would block light from the top, while the outer party cup blocks it from the sides, while keeping the clear inner cup so you can lift it out to check on the roots and solution levels.

I always keep enough back to plant next year in case something disastrous happens. Once I get good seed from my own, I have the option of tossing the older stuff if I wish. Next season you'll have 1,000s of seeds if you save your own. They make good xmas gifts for other gardeners and green-thumbs.

No, we're in a downtown loft apartment so everything we have is indoors, in pots or hydro setups. There is also only 2 of us, so what we have is sized for our typical consumption, a full family would need a lot more going at the same time.

Pic related is all you really need in the way of parts - start your seeds as normal in a seed tray, we prefer to have them in rock wool cubes so they can move easily later. Let the seedlings get to the point they would be ready to transplant, check the root lengths - they need to be about 1-2" long so they can get down into the solution.

Take one clear cup, one clear lid (painted black is a good idea as noted above), cut the lid in the center to seat the 2" net cup so it won't fall in. Place your seedling in the wool cube down into the net cup, threading the roots down through the bottom. Fill the inner clear cup with nutrient solution, make sure not to cover the entire root, you have to leave an air gap. Place the clear cup, lid, and plant assembly inside an opaque party cup, this is to protect the solution against algae blooms.

As the plant grows, if it starts to get lopsided you can place some clay pebbles in the remaining space of the net cup in order to prop up and support the stem. Place under lights of your choice, we use T5 6400 florescents.

For solution, we're blending our own based on recipes we got from Youtube growers:
- 1 gallon water
- adjust pH with pH-down treatment until it is between 6.0-6.4
- Epsom salts - 2g
- Calcium Nitrate - 3g
- 4-18-38 fertilizer - 3g
(You can tailor the fertilizer to specific plants if wanted)
Dissolve everything in a cup/bowl with hot water and mix thoroughly, make sure no particulates are left. Dump into the larger water and stir. We make 2 gallon batches at a time in a water cooler with a spigot on it, and dispense into a 1L bottle at a time to top plants off. The cooler makes sure your batch is protected from light and air. Keep it at room temp.

Always rest your plants, they need a night cycle. I typically turn on my lights when I get up in the morning, turn them off about 9pm. You can get automated power supplies that turn them on/off for you.

Random fyi - what we like to do is have multiple plants going at the same time - 4 cups of lettuce at a time for example. Harvest sparingly from each when you want to eat off of them, take the lowest and biggest leaves and don't overharvest, which can lead to the plants wanting to bolt. Once you get plants to the size you're harvesting off of them regularly, start a replacement set. The longest we've had a lettuce go before bolting is about 3.5 months. Herbs do really well in this setup too, part of that original pic you can see some mint plants on the right. (great in mojitos)

Bolting is flowering. It will start to grow a flower stalk. Once it starts, the chemicals in the plant leaves normally change the flavor. It can be all nice and tasty then turn into something that makes you spit, drool, and curse that you put it in your mouth.

Oh no, you're constantly refilling, which is why you make so much solution. At their mature stage they'll drink a cup dry in 2-3 days. You have to keep an eye on them, which is why being able to pull the inner cup out to look at it is good.

You can do the same setup in a larger container - I've got a rubbermaid tote that I drilled 6 x 2" holes in the lid to seat net cups, and just filled the tub most of the way up. Currently running 6 basil plants in it, and haven't had to fill it after the initial time yet.

"California Wonder" is very easy to grow. Sure they take longer than hot peppers (only ripen to full red in August here in my cool summer climate, while first hot peppers like Cayenne will be ready in June) but as long as you plant them in full sun into the garden soil they produce a lot (don't do really well potted though)

I'm thinking of fencing a big part of my land using shrubs like:

How about a fig hedge? I'm from a much colder area (Germany) but a big part of my privet hedge succumbed to "droughts" of the last couple years (normal here is 530mm rain/year, but we had about 350 in 2015), so I replaced it with figs, which can handle dry conditions much better

Should match all your requirements (native to S Europe and MENA, grows bushy, and stays small if pruned)

Funny you should say that actually, I'm trying this with peppers and seeing how they grow. I've given the experimental group about three loads of cum so far, and will compare their results with a control group, maybe I'll post picture of the final product.

Well this is ironic. Turns out those pleco caves run about $10 each on average, and a lot of pleco breeders just use these irrigation spikes instead since they're about the same dimensions but way cheaper.

Fuck you for being in zone 9. You probably have a pretty long season. You can always harvest beets to prove you can do it (3-4 week plant-to-harvest).

You can also get some season extension (2 weeks or so) through covering your plants with high/low tunnel material.

Irrigation spikes normally have holes in them so make sure the ones you get are suited for super slow water release like unglazed clay would be or whatever rate you need. I still have some grass left but nowhere near as much. I only reseed the back every year for the dogs. Yea it makes a great boost for compost. I tend to make a lot of leaf mold that I mix in with the regular compost as well. Though I have SOOO many beds I still have to buy compost from a nursery down the street.

I live in an area where there's lots of horses. So, I occasionally call up horse barns to see if I can get some manure. So far it has all been free, but I have to work mucking stalls to get it. Some times, that's up to 4 heaping loads of manure 1 foot above the cab of a full sized pickup truck. It is basically black gold for me. Rarely, I'm able to get several contractor's trash bags of leaf litter from the local town. I use that for litter in the chicken coop. The chickens reduce it to particles. The litter then goes on the compost pile over the winter.

I get free hay and straw from a local farm supply company. They have big tractor trailers where they sell the bales of hay. There's always a 4 inch deep layer of loose hay laying around. Since they have to work to sweep it out at a dumping site, they love it when I stop by to load it up so they don't have to work. I can get 2-4 truck loads of that which I stuff into contractor's trash bags and use as litter for the chickens or mulch. Though there's lots of grass seed in some of it, so mulch isn't as good an idea. The chickens pick out the seeds though so their litter is clean of seed.

Rarely, a tree trimming company like Asplundh is in the area and I make sure to tell them they can dump their wood chips on my property which they love to do. I can use it as mulch for flower beds and/or let the pile rot down into compost. I prefer not to use it directly on my crops as mulch since I don't know what woods are in it. Stuff like black cherry and black walnut wouldn't be good to use uncomposted/unaged since both use herb suppressing chems (juglone). Those break down in 6 months and the mulch can be used without a problem after that. Some people get grass clipping from various city programs, but that can be a bit dangerous for a normal gardener. It can contain lawn herbicides that will render your garden useless for up to 5 years.

That's for cutting large swaths of grass, harvesting wheat, or cutting hay, its more akin to a lawn mower than a weedwacker.

String trimmers are for edging, cutting around fence posts, trees, etc.

I peeked.

The far hive is good and happy, all on the frames. I put a feeder jar directly over the inner cover hole to deter them from changing their minds and moving up there. Didn't look at any of the frames or remove the queen cage.

The near hive has built a bunch of comb on the top of the lid, in the upper box. None on the frames. I hope they freed the queen before decided to move up there.

This means I get to shake them all into the lower box on Tuesday or Wednesday, when we have some nicer weather. I'm too nervous to do it today, when they're already grumpy from the rain. I also want to give any stragglers a good chance to fly back into the hive.

Hopefully it won't set them back too far in terms of brood rearing. They'll have to re-draw all the comb and will lose any larvae that I'll be removing with the comb they've drawn so far.

I have both. You really need to get into the swing of things with the scythe and that requires knowledge of how to sharpen it and properly use it. If you don't already have one, I highly suggest getting one that is hollow plastic. It will be much lighter. They are great for big areas where you can't get a mower and don't want to carrying in tons of fuel. In the modern age they are mostly used by people who do contract work for clearing right of ways under giant power lines. They even keep their lunch and water down in the tube body of the scythe handle.

Don't use a scythe for thick wood weeds or thick saplings. You'll need to get in lots of practice before attempting it on such things so you know what you can cut. Otherwise, you can chip the blade because of an incorrect angle. A powered trimmer is best for edging around things and with a blade it is good for sawing down larger stuff. The scythe will also be much lighter and easy to use than a trimmer while in open areas. You just need to get past the learning curve.

Make loam from it. Loam is 1 part sand, 1 part clay, and 1 part compost. For less work, you can dig a hole, fill it with loam then plant the transplant in it. The hole will need to be fairly large and deep. You'll need to mix in some of the surrounding clay into the loam around the bowl of the hole. Then fill it up with pure loam. That transition zone will help water drain out. Planting your stuff up a bit higher on a mound will also help.

Sure feels good to finally be planting out in the ground now. It is taking forever. There was still a lot to do to prep the bed. Common Burdock/Gabo I neglected to dig up last fall was sprouting. It was 16 inches deep. I had to move half a wheel barrow of soil to dig down to it. If it hasn't gone woody, I'll have some for dinner.

if you want to use the grass you cut for feeding animals you will need to cut that with the scythe, otherwise string trimmer is faster

At least for rabbits when i had them, they refused to eat grass if it was cut by string trimmer

It got warm and sunny enough that I felt comfortable opening them all the way up. Had to brush damn near all the bees out into an empty box, playing a bee version of tower of hanoi with boxes and frames.

Got them all into one box, scraped them old comb off the lid and set it out in front of the hive for them to clean. Was about two 6" x 4" pieces of comb with syrup, a little pollen, and some eggs. Instead of mangling those pieces into a frame, I'm just letting those eggs go. No larvae or anything, so I'm not too worried about them. Didn't manage to find the queen, so I'll have to be really good next inspection to make sure there are eggs being laid. If not I'll have to requeen. Really glad I got a suit, or else I'd be stung all over.

Took the opportunity to inspect the other hive, which is doing very well. Middle two frames are 2/3 drawn, with eggs, pollen and honey.

I used an angle grinder and in the past a bench belt sander. If you use either, make sure not to heat up the edge too much; make many quick passes instead of slow passes. Yeah, bees absolutely HATE being brushed off the comb. It is the #1 thing that makes them batshit crazy even with smoke. Smoke helps a lot and keeps them from freaking out for the most part. Some hives are just "mean" in comparison to others, but use smoke anyway.

Inspecting the hive, when you pull that inner cover off, the frames are lined with little bee eyes looking at you. A puff or two or smoke and they retreat into the heart of the frame

It is the septic field that is what you need to watch out for being too close. It is also only a problem if you are tossing stuff into your septic that's pretty bad in the first place. Like things containing heavy metals, medications, cleaning chemicals, and such. If you are not then there's no worry so long as the roots are not so close, to the field, that they get into the pipes and clog things up. Which is also a safe distance for eating anything anyway. 25 feet is plenty of distance. I'd go no closer than 15 feet from the longest branch of a shrub and 25-30 for a tree, just to keep their roots out of the system.

Well, you should have 2 tools. A sharp one for shoveling your garden where the soil isn't rocky and a bluntish one for everything that is rocky. Regardless, the shovel shouldn't be razor sharp. The angle should be a bit like a splitting maul or root axe. That will let the edge last longer. You probably only need to touch it up 1-3 times a year depending on how badly it is abused.

For solid rock and large pieces, use a spud bar or mattock.

This is my side yard, front is similar. Originally had raised beds down in the front but wanted more room. This was just undyed wax free cardboard on the bottom, topped off with about a foot of compost. I refresh them every year. lol took several days to put a few forsythias in.

Got some local rare species peppers and tomatoes started, they're doing pretty good but still have about 2-3 weeks of growing to do till they go out... Where I live it often gusts up to a nasty 60 mph on a daily basis, and the only thing to do is start hardening that shit off young; which means mostly growing from seed, because most buyable transplants are already too large and weak to harden off in this fuckass wind.

If you live in a less windy place polytunnels and wall o waters and homemade tubes of plastic wrapped around tomato cages can work quite nicely.

But if it's truly windy where you are, all manner of polytunnels and structures and things will be ripped from the ground no matter how well staked

I'm not trying to be a major bummer, just don't want anyone to feel my pain of bought and homemade structures ripping away and smashing into neighbors property

Lemongrass/ginger/garlic are easy low maintenance but slow growing.

Bell peppers and sweet potatoes are perfect to start now if you're heading into summer.

Tomatoes are super easy and are a good first vegetable. Start from store plants, keep them alive and then try some seeds once you've mastered that.

I'd love to have them both. I made pic related for in my front yard, I planned on clearing out the soil that is there now (it had lavender but those haven't started groing too much yet), putting the frame on top and filling that with a layer of fresh soil. It's rougly one meter by a half meter. I planned on taking the largest section for garlic and the other two for bell pepper and ginger. Would that be enough space for 1/2 bell pepper plants?

And the sweet potatoes, should I use the regular potato techniques I find online or is it a different process considering they're not related?

No, it is that "easy", but when compared to plant-and-forget stuff like garlic it is on the "hard" end of the scale. There's nothing really difficult to grow that is commonly grown for food. Sweet potatoes are only slightly different. For one, you can train the vines up and eat the leaves.

Cilantro
Garlic
Onions
Lime Tree (takes a few years in a large pot you can set indoors in winter.)

Check it for trash.

You may need to amend it. Knowing the nutrient levels and pH is a must. Get a test kit, the kind you mix soil and water and look at the color. Then you'll know what you need to add, if anything.

I wouldn't recommend starting with regular supermarket tomatoes, the genetic factors that make them somewhat okayish are only stable in the F1 generation, everything after that is all over the fucking place. Get yourself some nice seeds of old tomato-strains, those are almost always very intensive in flavor, the pest resistency varies quite a bit though. The climate and nutrition plays a bigger role than some think when it comes to certain strains, some may turn out as shit where you live. I live in Germany, can't really tell you something about how available my suggested strains are.

I need advice on mulching.

I have large garden beds. It's sunny and dry here. I need something to retain soil moisture. I can use grass as mulch easily.
How should the grass be prepared? Wet? Dry? Long? Short? I was told to look out for grass that has gone to seed. What does that look like?

With more work I can get leaves from a forest floor, and grind it up. Is that better or worse than grass?

Cut the grass, lay it out to dry. Once it has gone completely yellow and is completely dry, you can use it as mulch. Green wet grass will create lots of heat that will cook your plants. It also has lots of nitrogen that can root burn the plants. Grass with seed on it is easy to spot. It is the stuff that doesn't look like blades of grass. Length of dry grass doesn't matter too much, but shorter stuff will be easier to move around, even out, and pack down.

Leaves are quite fine. For a mulch, you don't need to chop them up. You only chop them up when composting to speed the process, but that's a lot of work and energy that isn't really needed.

Recent transplant to a larger flowerbed, wilting on the side least exposed to sunlight - other parts of same plant are fine. Soil is potting earth mixed with perlite for drainage.

Mondo grass-anon here from thread 119. I cinnamon misted the mondo grass regularly and kept the soil pretty dry (watering just enough once every 2 weeks or so). It seemed to slow the pythium splendens but not eradicate it. I have now put the mondo grass outside the window into the plant hospital/mortuary and now we can only wait and see. It will get more sunlight and breeze and since mondo is quite hardy maybe it'll even recover, but I probably won't really know until at least mid spring whether or not any new growth will shoot up.

Anyway, I'm now growing some wheatgrass and barley (probably should have just done this in the first place) because it's nice and green and provides good privacy in the window.

All the growing guides I've found are for people to grow it as catgrass or for wheatgrass juice (gross) but I want to let it fully grow and keep it alive essentially forever. Any tips? Should I trim it regularly? Should I tear out patches once or twice a year a replace with fresh seed/soul? How do I keep the grass alive and healthy in perpetuity?

That depends on what you'll be doing with it. It will get very long. Trimming it like your lawn will help it thicken up and be a bit bushier. You'll have square ends of the blades that can discolor and look a bit unsightly depending on the level of aesthetics you want.

Most stuff should be fine unless it's especially sensitive (like wasabi), just have to water more and you shouldn't use a greenhouse of course. Bolting shouldn't be an issue either, as in most cases it's induced by a previous cold period
It's much cooler where I live, but it did go to 40°C a few years back, plus my tomatoes are under a clear plastic roof (to protect against rain and the blight it causes) so it got to about 60 under there back then, yet they didn't mind at all (maybe temporarily droopy leaves)

my front lawn is just grass
but in my backyard, about half of it is run with clover and other "weeds" because i like the health benefits it provides to the lawn community and nobody really sees that portion of my lawn

Currently my lawn is kinda shitty. I just moved in and the previous owners did do anything to maintain it. It's mostly thatch bare spots and weeds. Back yard is a little better shape than the front.

I like the idea of a clover lawn because it supposedly low maintenance and water wise. I live in Utah and it gets pretty expensive to keep a lawn alive.

I also like that it flowers which helps reseed itself and helps the pollinators our. My wife is against it though because she's worried about the aesthetics

$15 for 8ft, can get about 4 beds if you want out of that. Some people do 8in deep bed so figure you can get more even.
Not sure if you have a truck but would imagine even if you rent a truck and get a few of them that would be cheaper then the premade stuff.

I've grown red clover as ground cover for deer before. It is much taller, but mostly the same thing. My own yard is mostly white clover in some places. If I let it go to flower that means the grass gets pretty tall too. If you've remove all sod and grass then planted the clover, it would work well enough. It is a lot softer to walk in and won't cause red welts on skin like some grasses do or like how some people with allergies get. If you leave the sod and grass, it won't be nearly as good at all.

Thanks friend. I just want it as a houseplant, and to offer some privacy so I don't have to keep my window shade down. I basically just want to keep it alive forever but I don't know if trimming it will achieve that or if I should just let it go. Then there's no problem with allowing it to grow fully without cutting. you also want, "Perennial Wheatgrass." You should also consider wild clumping grasses. Those are the ones you see in someone's lawn where there's a big clump of grass that never seems to go away. Even broomsage will look nice when the tops are dead and dry.

The biggest thing wrong with that pdf is the fact that a pot will have worse drainage without round river stones because there's less surface area for the water to exit the soil when it has the stones in it. Without the stones, the water must exit only a few tiny holes where it can form drain channels in the soil over time. With gravel, the area is more dispersed before it gets released into the gravel and has more time to pool up in the gravel and pour out the holes in the pot, helping prevent drainage problems. These effect is simulated in pots that have a plastic screened mesh insert in the bottom to act as an air gap. If you are using a pot that is all screened mesh at the bottom then it would be better not to put gravel in since it would then block more surface area and slow down drainage.

Correct. Transplanted it with the whole old-pot-shaped lump, but it is the side facing the edge of the new flowerpot as well.

Would all of it be wilting if it was a watering problem? If anything, I'd say the rest has already grown (10 days in).

Early on a single branch on that same side wilted and died, now it's 5 that are wilting, on the same main branch as the first. Any ideas?

Going to be getting 5000m2 of land in the south of Spain. The region farmers grow vine, oranges, lemons, Olives, almonds. I'm thinking of having a permenate orchard or vineyard and a seasonal grow between the trees.
This will be hobby farming as I have a job, any suggestions would be helpful.
