The reason a froe is L-shaped is so that once the blade is in the wood you can lever the wood open, thereby splitting the rest of the log round. Removing the L-shape turns a froe into something else completely. That is like removing the claw from a claw hammer and turning it into a ball peen hammer. Those are two different tools for completely different jobs yet they are somewhat similar.
