Go and buy yourself a pair of snowshoes off craigslist, and pick up either a pair of gaiters or ski pants. Normally it's much cheaper off season, but you might still be able to snag some at an okay price since it isn't fully into winter yet. If you really were sinking to your waist you might want to size up on snowshoes for extra flotation or, get the MSRs with detachable tails so you can take or put them off depending on conditions (like later in season when the snow is more compact)
How were the road conditions to the trailhead? Or did you park by the main road leading into the service roads?
