How do I get innamtn in the winter

Not b8, I'm trying to break into winter camping this year. Problem is only places to go /out/ near me are steep mtns with a lot of snow ( no snowshoes yet).
Other than like 3 main roads nothing is plowed. All my usual haunts are definitely in deep snow.

Do I just have to drive up canyon until the road stops being plowed and try to hike thru the snow?
I'm North of SLC if anyone knows a spot they wouldn't mind sharing.

Have you got any insulated boots? I used to walk around in snow a pretty good bit in Sorrels. I would say, assuming no ability to acquire new gear presently (or would have snow shoes), just go to wherever you *can* get to with what you have, and that experience will help you learn what you're going to need to get further. Don't push too far beyond your present capacity to the point of serious danger. Take it in whatever level of baby steps you need and enjoy what you can already achieve to the fullest.

I've got decent boots, they are supposedly waterproof, but soak through in about 2 hours in wet snow.
Currently the plan is to park on the side of the rd if possible and hike thru the snow for a mile and hope it's not to deep

Sounds like a decent enough plan, I'd maybe carry some extra socks in case they do soak through, and stay away from any trees that might have "tree wells", be very careful, and don't hesitate to turn back if you feel danger in your gut. Do you have hiking poles? Use those or a hiking stick to check snow depth and avoid the tree well type situations. Is there a certain place in your boots that soaks through or the whole thing? You might can seal up an isolated problem area. Be sure to carry solid fire making tools.

There are a lot of snowshoes on sale right now, and if that's absolutely not an option there are DIY options that work well if you are talented enough to make them.
Just remember to layer with non-cotton materials and have a waterproof outer layer. Try not to go out to far alone.

Agreed, but that would be fine and a good experience. OP could camp there and have an awesome time if their clothing is providing adequate dryness and warmth. If it is not and they must turn back then the experience is still very worthwhile. Just do what you can, OP, and cherish every second of it.

Honestly OP, I might be going a bit against the grain here but I wouldn't even really bother with winter /out/ if you don't have a group of friends to get you into it. Winter shit flatout sucks if you don't have the right equipment/training and even then it's far more miserable than summer time /out/. You have factors like avalanche danger to worry about along with the absurd pricing of equipment for backcountry shit or just the sheer banality of postholing. Fuck around with some snowshoes if you want or plan some short ass jaunts where you posthole with gaiters + waterproof boots but other than that try to find other avenues to get involved. Shit sucks

Anon, I'm going to be honest with you. You need snowshoes, like it's not going to be enjoyable without them if there is anymore than 8" of snow on the ground. If you wanna go full retard without snowshoes, you'll need microspikes and knee high gaiters at the bare minimum. Also waterproof insulated winter boots if you plan on keeping your toes.

Not well, I was too autistic to hike down forest roads where the snowmobiles were.
I tried to go through the snow to a nice spot I know and had to turn back after about 500 yds because it was waist deep powder.

Go and buy yourself a pair of snowshoes off craigslist, and pick up either a pair of gaiters or ski pants. Normally it's much cheaper off season, but you might still be able to snag some at an okay price since it isn't fully into winter yet. If you really were sinking to your waist you might want to size up on snowshoes for extra flotation or, get the MSRs with detachable tails so you can take or put them off depending on conditions (like later in season when the snow is more compact)

How were the road conditions to the trailhead? Or did you park by the main road leading into the service roads?

Looks real comfy by the way, hope that encourages you to get back /out/ but properly equipped next time

Was fresh power so I was immediately sinking to the ground.
Parked off the main road which is a lightly used 2 lane highway. Plows do a decent job.
I'm going to buy a set of 10x36 set of snowshoes and hope they work.

It was between knee and waist, depending on location. I was at about 8,000ft pines start at about 7500 and I was missing them.
We just had 5 days of snowstorms, I'm hoping it doesn't get much deeper for a bit.
