It's like a hatchet but you can replace the haft incredibly easily. You can use different lengths for different purposes or to fit different packs, or to just experiment and find the ideal balance for your body, and switch them out whenever you want. You can make a new haft very easily from small diameter wood even under field conditions. In an emergency you can even just use a section of sapling. The lighter head performs better on small diameter blow down which serves as the most useful source of firewood in most cases but still fells and sections larger trees very easily. The long bit geometry lends itself to hooking and dragging wood and using the axe as a climbing aid. It planes well when carving because it keeps your palm further away from the wood. You can also push the head halfway down the haft and use it with both hands like a reverse drawknife. It's a better urban survival tool because the bit will penetrate things like sheet metal much better than a hatchet, and it doesn't matter if you ruin the haft because it's so easily replaced. It's a much better weapon because the long, thin bit will bite deeply into flesh and bone. It's better than a hatchet in every way.
