Back in the day, a couple of guys I worked with were deer hunting here in Michigan and came across a freshly dead and obviously shot elk, which someone had probably thought was a big deer and upon discovering they had in fact shot an elk, ran off.
They reported it to the DNR and a week later, two DNR officers showed up at both their houses and requested (note; did not demand, though they could have with a court order) their rifles to do ballistic tests on them.
The guys handed them over and a few days later, their rifles were returned and they never heard anything from the DNR about it again.
