Truth is I haven't done a single great walk during my time here. I did sections of Abel Tasman hence my bit of advice, but otherwise I could never be bothered to book stuff and share huts with dozens of people.
There are plenty cross country trips that are as beautiful and don't require all that stuff, I mean sure Milford looks fucking incredible but for my European standards any nice piece of bush is incredible kek
There are hundreds upon hundreds of huts so I picked irrelevant "first come first serve" ones
I also visited a loooooot of tiny scenic reserves, some would only take half an hour to visit but especially on the North Island they tend to preserve pristine old growth and being surrounded by paddocks they're a haven for native birds. Completely devoid of tourists as well.
