It's astonishing how much folks forget things from even just a century ago and even more so how easily data and media can be manipulated to fit it to a desired paradigm. The takeaway is that wildfires were, have been, and always will be a natural feature of the western US and that folks needed to plan and prepare for them rather than try to eliminate them. Part of their natural function or result was to recycle, replenish and renew forest nutrients often allowing them to regrow with even greater biodiversity at their climax until the next cycle hit. Anyone living in a naturally fire prone forest should be aware of this.
