My 2 cents worth: I have found that cotton socks are worthless, make blisters. Wool is better. Now what I do is find pairs labeled "hiking socks" and that seems to work best. They are usually some combination of synthetic and/or wool. Maybe it's the placebo effect, but I never get blisters with socks like this and well-fitting shoes. Lately I have been wearing nothing but Keen shoes.
