The reason is because your body immediately goes into conservation mode and turns your muscle into fat. Then when you get off of a fast your body will overcompensate and store up calories as fat even more than before the fast. I felt like shit, looked like shit and by the end of things was no better off.
You need to balance out your diet and count your calories yes, but you also need healthy exercise and a proper /fit/ routine. Muscle growth requires proper exercise and calories.
Getting fat people into hiking is more beneficial then just letting them waste away at home.

Run on your breaks, try to get some push ups and crunches in every morning, when you can turn off the TV or move while doing so.
