Beaver pelts were a dime a dozen on the frontier, so often times you would just give some Indians a couple blankets and a kettle in exchange for a dozen or so pelts, then ship them back home and charge absurd rates because beaver was in vogue. Also it was only a brief point where pelts were actually worth that much, though at one point it was actually more than gold by weight.
