Having the inner sitting diagonally inside the rectangular fly allows the netting to utilize the full height of the pole, which is how it gets its increased headroom.
The offset pole structure isn’t unique to the x-mid or the high route, but combining that with the inner being on the diagonal is unique to the x-mid, and does in fact give it increased headroom.
