>>2260687There's no normal hunting thread that I saw so I figured I'd post here. Fur top, leather palm with fur lining the inside. You can see the leather palm side wrapping around the index finger in this picture. I made this mitten so I could hunt with something thin on my hands and not freeze my fingers off. I usually put a thin leather "driving glove" on my right hand so I can get a good grip on my rifle and not have excess fabric in the trigger guard, but it's getting too cold for that as we continue into winter. I needed something with grip that was thin but had no slip. Normally I wear US surplus trigger finger mittens, but they're just so bulky for a .22.
It needs a cuff IMO as I made it too short around the wrist, but I'll get to that later in the season. I may insert a piece of leather on the pinky finger side as it feels a bit cramped as is. I left the top edge of the palm side open so I could stick my fingers through it. That was by accident; I was 90% through sewing and that was the last thing I had to do. With some overlapping fur, I realized it should seal fine as is, so I left it as a "feature". Still needs some thread ends tucked away, too. Haven't taken it out hunting yet. Still smells like a campfire from the tanning process; we'll see if that scares the animals away soon. I'm also hoping the movement of my glove doesn't freak out the squirrels more than a normal glove as I'm sure they notice squirrel fur quite easily.
As a side note, what ever happened to the anon who wanted to make a squirrel pelt coat? Did he ever give an update on that or did he forget about it and move on?
>>2272238Check what other seasons you have in your state. Mine has squirrel until the end of February and a couple of other animals are open year round. Not the same, but still something to do while freezing your ass off and you can get some pelts to play around with making stuff out of. This mitten only required two squirrels IIRC.
