I'll start off with a light perusing of the closely interrelated and lauded series of Peterson Field Guides that focus on edible plants, mushrooms, and medical plants and herbs, which while a little too new wave for me, have their high points.
But when A Field Guide to Insects: America North of Mexico came out in '83, I think Peterson Field Guides really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole guide has a clear, crisp delivery, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the compendium chapters a big boost. Petey has been compared to Kaufman, but I think Petey has a far more erudite, natural sense of nature.
