Having to hike over snow where there used to be a path also sucks. 16 hours of darkness per day sucks. All 3 of these things suck on their own, but combine all of the good aspects and it more than evens out. Crisp, ice cold air, water, and ground stimulate the mind and body in such a different way than anything else. Seeing the sun low in the sky at noon makes you appreciate the days when it's high and not shining directly in your eyes for most of the day. And of course, the white beauty of snow, such a mysterious yet simple thing that, on a clear day, shines brighter than any other surface and blends into the horizon. All this magic happening all at once is a treasure.
