B: Don't get anything inexpensive. Get something that goes beyond your needs and pay good money for it. Make sure it is warrantied and that the company who sells it doesn't cheap out on warranties. In the USA, double check them with the Better Business Bureau reviews. Do this for both an electric utility well pump and a manual water well backup system. Be that a hand levered pump sitting on the well head or a bucket pail system. Also consider using a water tower system(insulated & heating in cold areas) and installing a pond.
>freezerOff-grid capability merely means sustainability. Your freezer should run off utility power, but should have a method of backup so when the utility goes out, you can keep your food frozen. If the freezer requires electricity then you can generate electricity through several independent means, (wind, hydro, solar, etc). If the freezer runs on gas then you may be SOL if you are for some reason cut off from that single resource, (biogas is an option). Though, you could convert a gas freezer to use any type of fuel if you are a tinkerer, (that would include an electric heater as well.)
