For the soot, wtf are you talking about about? The pot or pan will get a thin black layer that doesn't affect anything, and wipes off easily. That's after weeks of use, mind you. My pan still hasn't developed it after a month on the road.
So here's me cooking lunch, in wind and rain near a river somewhere in rural Iowa. It took eleven minutes to set up, start, and cook, and that's without me cheating with lighter fluid like I usually do when it's wet out.
