Fucking hell, do I just pussy out and spend the weekend innahouse or should I brave it against the thunderstorm? Anyone have tips for backpacking in heavy rain?

Seems like every time i cancel a hike due to rain the weather ends up clear.

Also, check the rainfall amount. Rain might be forecast but 0.07" or some shit is no reason to second guess your trip.

They're calling for light showers Saturday, thunderstorms all day Sunday, and then showers on Monday, all three days I planned to be out.

I might just brave it, it'll be fun tasking myself against the elements.

Does anyone have any tips for starting a fire with wet wood?

Just make sure you have the right gear to keep warm if you get soaked and then go for it. A 40 degree night in cotton clothing and a down sleeping bag while wet isn't safe. I'd go for it though.

If you have adequate rain gear, just go do it.

There is absolutely NOTHING worse than the feel when you cancel something cool because weather, and then the weather never shows up.

At least if you're out there doing it, you know you're fucking DOING it like a badass. Even if it turns out to be a miserable slog while you are at it, you will cherish the memory.

You can usually get dry wood from the middle. Feather sticks are your friend. Also, booze will help light wet wood. If you've got time before you go, make fire starters (I use lamp wick, soaked in olive oil, dipped in beeswax). Fluff an end, hit a spark, burns long enough to dry your tinder. Tinder dries kindling, fire gets going.

Hiking during rain is okay only when you're headed towards lunch in a warm and cozy cabin. If you're wandering aimlessly then only thing you're going to be thinking about will be uncomfortable feel of sadness.

I use a military poncho to keep myself and my backpack dry. Add an umbrella so my head is comfy even in heavy rain (google: birdiepal). Light raintrousers to keep my legs dry (side zip).

I just deal with wet feet, nothing can be done.

If it's been raining multiple days like that I don't even bother with fire. Yea you can get one started, but it's just not worth the effort for me unless it's needed for warmth.

I was in the same situation not that long ago. If it was just rain fine, but there were flash flood warnings all throughout the state for the whole weekend. Didn't want to drive on mountain back roads in that. And I think there's definitely a line between toughing out bad weather and just abject fucking misery
