Unironically is more than enough for a day hike unless the weather is really rough and you carry extra clothing or you're preparing a decent meal. Otherwise just carry a water bottle and a couple snacks and you're ready to roll.

This. You can get a nice waist pack from a local military surplus store for like ten bucks and that'll be enough to carry a water bottle, clif bar and rain poncho for a day hike.

dude a little bit of soy is not going to give you titties. obviously don't sit around pounding soy protein powder and stuffing your face with soy beans all day every day, but if you eat some tofu or a cliff bar here an there really is no need to worry about it. its the same thing with BCAA's if you use it twice a week as an after workout supplement for a few months its fine, but if you pound that shit like its water its going to have negative effects.

What are your thoughts on packable day packs? The ones made of light material that can pack down small so you can fit it in a larger pack?

Im thinking of getting one for my backpacking bag. That way I can set up camp and just use the packable and my waterbladder for day hikes.

Do the packable ones offer enough support? Right now im looking at this.

I use a REI flash 18 bag. Basically an ultralight gymbag with hiking taken to mind. Two cross body straps, lots of extra loops, pocket for a camelbak, nice and simple. Has loops for attaching to back of bigger bag, or you could smush it inside with no prob. Got mine for 30 bux. Really tho i prefer just water bottle plus fanny pack with poncho, tools, light, etc. For day humps.
