Went on an adventure today, hoping to find a decent stave to make a bow out of for /diy/, but couldn't really find anything worth my time.

As soon as I dropped into the valley, I saw a moose. Probably a buck, and since shedding season has passed, I might be able to find his antlers.

You can just imagine taking a big dead birch like this and using the bark as a backpack, or as a big water barrel.

It's too bad I didn't find any chaga or other useful birch fungi, since those are usually pretty common and are so useful.

Pine pitch to hold it together, and I used to have twine around the bowl which was also covered in pitch, but I cut it off a while back. There's a strip of leather on the stem because I drilled through there. Drillbits don't like bendy portions.

Nope, cleaned all of the marrow out of the antler, so there's not much for it to stick to. The bowl tends to get pretty hot when smoking though, since it's a really dense material.

Antlers are bone, but they're a lot denser than skeletal bones. They're put under a lot of abuse, which is also why they're shed yearly.

Here's a shortbow I made a year back or so. Picture's old, too.

Cedar, something like 30-40# draw. Used it mostly for birds, from grouse to geese.
