Yes I have a chainsaw, but i enjoy cutting wood with an axe, and i think it is a great skill for outdoorsmen. Its rare you see someone who actually has a clue how to use one and im wondering if anyone on out appreciates the reliability of a sharp bit of steel on a stick

Yes, I also use an axe since I mainly chop wood for the fireplace and I dislike the sound of the chainsaw engine, but if I have to remove a big tree which has fallen on the driveway, chainsaw is the way to go.

About the only things I use an axe for any more are limbing and grubbing, so I don't burn up all my bar oil and fuck up the chain on my saw.

One of my cousins died from a chainsaw slash to his thigh. He made it as far as his front porch before dying. Another cousin had a chain fly off in some manner and it nearly took his arm of at the shoulder. He lived, but chronic pain turned him into a pain killer addict until he died from complications to all that a few years later.

I prefer using non-powered hand tools.

It’s great if you’re in a static camp, homestead. Not useful if you’re ultralight backpacking. So I don’t use it much since I’m hiking most of the time. Also hatchets are a meme, get a legit axe or get a saw.

yeah i agree for gathering decent firewood hatchets are slightly less meme tier than big knives of machetes. You can still get decent axes that are a bit lighter, i have a basque axe which is 1.5kg total and will outcut a 30'' bowsaw

1 room with loft, hexagon shape. 1 door, 1 stone fireplace, 2 windows, and 1 ladder. Each wall was 10 feet long on the inside. So, it was like 260 square feet of floor space plus the loft which I don't recall. I cheated with the fireplace. It was all stone except for the flue, that was standard metal stove pipe. So, once it warmed up it acted as a nice thermal mass radiator. I figure someone didn't know how to use a fireplace and a log rolled out or something. If I had used a standard small cast iron stove, I'd probably still have the place.

I'd rather split with a wedge n sledge or an actual splitting maul. Obviously those are impractical while camping but when splitting multiple cords for a fireplace, doing it with a regular axe sucks.

If you are camping you shouldn't need to split anything. There should be enough deadfall limbs around for whatever thickness you need. I always use a splitting maul when splitting cord wood. It has a flat butt on one side for pounding wedges. A felling axe has a flat butt too, but being so light, it isn't that great for anything beyond felling and felling wedges. I always use a double bit felling axe for felling since I have to hit low sometimes. I never fell anything over 10-12 inches so I never needed felling wedges.

For bushcraft or actual building I use a hatchet mostly. The larger stuff requires an axe, otherwise it is a waste of time.

Sorry to hear that, but both sound like preventable accidents by using proper PSA. I can understand not wanting to work with Powertools, though. I use an battery powered chainsaw privately which is enough for occasional tree removal and has less noise and vibration.

For splitting. All my logs get splitted by axe. Some bigger logs get the wedge and hammer treatment. Mauls I don't use at all. I've got one but it's one of the worse tools I own, absolutely useless. Maybe it's a bad maul.

Yeah, having a spotter, proper safety equipment, proper communication service (those were accidents in the 1980s in super remote locations,) and proper training stuff like that wouldn't happen or at least people could get help fast enough to recover from it. Just having a spotter with you can mean all the difference in the world. They look out for you getting tired or doing something incorrectly. A lot of people have ego problems with using spotters, which is unfortunate for them.

I have a corded chainsaw I use around the yard. I love how quite it is and how instantly it stops when the trigger and/or safety are released. I rarely use it and instead use crosscut saws. A properly maintained crosscuts saw is a dream to use.

Vibration and noise are my biggest pet peeves for not using power equipment. Gorey death comes in second.

Even using a small, efficient campfire a 4-man camp can clear out a 5 acre area of deadfall sticks in about 3 days, necessitating burning stuff that needs to be split. More people, bigger fires, longer stays, colder weather, etc can even further increase the need for split wood while camping.

Can someone explain to an axe newfag how sharpening it works? I get the edge but how do I go about doing the shoulder properly so it remains convex? Do I just use the file and stones in a crescent shape behind the edge or what?

Well if the problem is speed of cutting then my video shows that it is'nt the case. Why would messy/wide cuts be a problem when /out/, big chips can be used as kindling?

When you make flat cuts with an axe it is for woodworking and that requires measurement, but the small buck saw, int he video, is not the tool for the job (crosscut saw it the proper tool speed, accuracy, and long term use). For burning it really doesn't matter in the end so long as it fits your usage.

Maybe but when I have 5 axes to sharpen and a truck of wood to chop for winter I don't fuck with it, I'm just carefull not to take too much material of the axe. Also, I need the blade to be shaped like pic related, it makes chopping SO much easier.

how is the bowsaw not the tool for the job? Its got much bigger teeth than most crosscut saws and will cut faster. If what you mean is single/double buck for long term use then yes I have one but its 5kg and 6 feet long, not easy to carry through thick brush. cuts very fast but doesn't split the wood

I don't mean a cross cut saw used for carpentry. For processing logs, like in the OP image, this is the proper tool to use. You use it with a makeshift log sawhorse. A buck saw or bow saw is what you use for bushcraft when you need to hike a long ways. Those are very light duty.

I am the one who cut the wood in the OP image using an AXE! i cut another 3 stacks the same, 4 ricks (4feet high and 8 feet long) this year as a challenge. the name is not crosscut its single/double buck. my saw is bigger

They are all crosscut saws, due to how you cut across the grain instead of a saw intended for making planks which is called a rip saw which have teeth facing one direction. Even the bow saw you are using is a crosscut saw. Because they are used with a sawbuck they are also called buck saws. Buck/bucking just means you are cutting firewood logs. A bow saw is a crosscut saw and a buck saw and is called a bow saw because of the shape. Single buck and double buck just means it is 1 handle or 2 handle for 1-2 people and used to do bucking. The large crosscut saw in your image is a one man felling saw, not a buck saw though it could be used for bucking. A hand saw or panel saw is a cross cut saw used for woodworking and carpentry and has those little teeth.

That's not even half of the pedantic terms there are. Ever use a pit saw? Don't. lol It is one of those few things where a powered saw is the best thing ever.

Tuatahi is a brand name, like Stihl. If they advertise it as a "single buck" it is because they intend it to be only used for sawing firewood on a sawbuk by one person. However, you are correct that it isn't a felling saw, I thought the spine was bent more (didn't open the thumbnail.) I think the spine looks very curved int he thumbnail, but not in the large image (straight spine is for bucking and curved spine is for felling).

I used this stuff for over 45 years and as a sawyer for 15 years or so.

Cleared some brush today with this, mostly 1-2" diameter shrubs and trees but I didnt have and shears so I cut them down and used a mattock to dig out the roots. Any idea about the make or intented purpose? I've got to have had this sitting in my shed for 15 years.

Hijacking thread to ask, for basic wood cutting/batoning (i.e. taking wood bundles and cutting them for bonfires at a cottage fire pit), what would be better, a small axe/hatchet, or a survival knife (or something similar)

I keep an axe in my truck. It’s gotten me unstuck more then once. I mainly use an axe for driving in wedges when I’m logging though. I’ll cut the odd branch or small tree crossing a trail or old fire road if I don’t have a chainsaw with me. It’s still a good skill worth learning

You don't cut wood with an axe. You split it. An axe is of substantially less value when not paired with a good saw. You saw logs then you split them. It's not an either-or type situation.

Yep nothing clears the mind and works the arms like some after breakfast wood splitting.

I don't know what brand our two mauls are, they must be like 60+ years old though, and say Made in Italy. We keep one with a wooden handle, and one with a fiberglass handle for my cousins who are not as well practiced.

My normal woods ax is a Hults Bruk Kalix

If you look at the picture Its all wood i cut without a saw, felled, limbed, bucked all with an axe. I do a lot of splitting too but cutting cross grain was the main thing this thread was supposed to be about

I like the hultafors axes a lot, once you grind them to 15 degrees they really cut wood efficiently

Of course if you just need to cut a shitload of wood at once and it's convenient for you then just use a chainsaw, that's why technology exists. For me, I like having the axe and I ain't ever going camping without one.

Yeah I’ll admit I do a lot more cross cutting with chain saws and hand saws, but sometimes I use an ax for the work out, or for awkward hang ups. Like pic related, this tree fell naturally, and was hung up over where I wanted a path, it was less work to deal with it with an ax than haul the chain saw in my boat and then a mile through the woods.

Nice job, I'm of the same opinion that dragging a chainsaw long distance is madness. Especially if you want to do it properly and wear chaps and heavy chainsaw boots, they suck for hiking. But then again cutting yourself with a chainsaw out in the middle of nowhere sucks even more. For this kind of work hand tools are much better

Id generally avoid any milsurp axes unless its splitting you want them for, they aren't really meant for chopping, mostly for grunts to cut roots with or something

Nice that's a cool method! Sadly all our fire wood is a byproduct of tree surgery. A lot of the wood comes out the tree in awkward sizes/shapes. Plus we have a tractor mounted splitter. Sadly that's for the older guys so I end up swinging an axe.

Um what, so on top of all my other gear i'm supposed to drag a big metal thing out into the woods that is likely to sink into the soft ground and wont work on a slope. Maybe if i was bucking in a yard, but im not. If im concerned about damaging the chain i cut most of the way through then roll the log over with my felling lever and cut the other side. Bad practices may not seem apparent until you've been doing it all day, are starting to get fatigued (because you don't have someone there to spot for you,) and you end up getting kickback because you did one little thing wrong. Other than myself and my father, I don't know anyone who uses chainsaws that hasn't injured themselves or someone else specifically doing things incorrectly.

if the log is raised up on one end causing tension and compression then the saw is more likely to get pinched and/or kickback making your method more dangerous. Unless you mean re lifting and propping up the log multiple times throughout cutting, in which case what a fucking waste of time

You are defending your ego so fucking hard that you don't even realize that you cut the log off on the high end past the log jack.

The log is never perfectly touching the ground in any manner while laying on the ground. When you start to cut into it and the ground is slightly uneven, but you can't see that, the log can pinch the bar and/or chain and cause kickback. With a proper sawbuck, log jack, or propping it up you completely avoid this issue.

Yo are those chain mail laced boots??? What are they??? When I was younger I tried cold forging thickish sheet steel into shin guards that could deflect an ax strike, with some success but nothing polished and comfortable enough to actually use.

I don't do enough ax work to justify some specialized like that, kevlar chaps suit me better, but hell I want to know.

Thanks for the info! And yeah I'm impressed with my HB and the ones I've handled. I plan on thinning down my 2.5# head at some point, just need to set aside a couple hours for some water stone time one weekend. Probably not going to go as thin as your ax looks though.

P.S. Mind the sloppy axmanship of pic related, it was the first tree (via ax) of a few seasons, and with the factory edge... and more excuses.

I live in northern Canada and my house and garage (3 bay and fucking huge) and heat all through wood. I used to chop with just an axe but it was basically a full time job so now I use a gas log splitter. I still make my kindling for my sauna, and the odd time the fire is out, with an axe though and enjoy splitting as a form of exercise
