can i go camping in national parks? or are they strictly just hiking and 'come in and enjoy the views and leave' sort of thing? are the crowded during the summer?

Most national parks allow camping, but with restrictions (specific locations, might need a permit, etc.) A few smaller ones like acadia don't allow it. Just google the NP you're interested in and "camping" and you will get the regulations
National forests on the other hand you can walk in set up a tent pretty much wherever you want

im thinking for the most part ill go to national forests since i just want comfy camping. i may go to a few of the 'must see' national parks for the hell of it. thanks

Each park/forest has different rules and laws. Find their online website and you should get all the info there that you need. A term you may need to look for it, "dispersed camping," which is camping anywhere without a parks' premade camping spot and firepit/BBQ grill. Some places you need to sign up, donate, buy permit, enter a lottery, etc. Some locations can have very long wait times for a camping permit. Like months in advance. If you can't get all the info you want for a park, call them up and talk to someone who can give you the info you need. Keep in mind there are 1000s of privately owned camping sites all over that are usually located near heavy tourist spots. Those normally have bathrooms, showers, electric, etc.

If you just want a general comfy camping experience, save your money and just go to the closest public land that allows dispersed camping. One of the honestly really wonderful things about /out/ activities is that they're accessible on the cheap almost anywhere. National Parks are definitely worth seeing, but are more like living museums of the most distinct parts of nature than cozy nature getaways.

Like others have said though, specifics depend on the park. The vast majority will allow some form of camping but it's mostly in developed campgrounds which are rather boring imo and often crowded. Even backcountry camping will require a permit at least. In the west, however, a lot of National Parks are surrounded by National Forest or BLM land which both allow free dispersed/backcountry camping for up to 2 weeks. Grand Canyon is the best park for this IMO bc a lot of Kaibab National Forest backs up right to the rim so you can camp on the edge without technically being in the park. Same canyon, same view, no rangers or tourists. Timp Point on the North Rim is my favorite spot, but anywhere along the rainbow rim trail would be great. Even at campsites that aren't so exciting on their own it's usually quite easy to set up camp right outside the park and just commute to the big sights in the morning. Doing something like this you could quite cheaply and easily combine a cozy backcountry camp experience with getting to see the parks.

There's national monuments, preserves, wilderness areas, and seashores, not sure about grasslands. Preserves and wilderness areas almost always allow camping, the others are case by case. BLM is the agency which oversees all the land owned by the federal government and not managed by another agency (like the park service). In the west they're a pretty big deal as the population density is so low there's a lot of land which was claimed by the US but nobody ever actually lived on it or economically developed it, so the government controls it. Sometimes this land is explicitly preserved like a national park, sometimes it's sold to private entities, sometimes it's used for cattle grazing, a lot of the time it just sits there being wild. BLM land is generally open to the public for any kind of recreation, but that varies by area.

There are national grasslands. Only ones I know of without google-fu is the Lyndon B Johnson National Grasslands to the north of Fort Worth. It's not quite like a national forest, but that might be because its in Texas, and federal lands are a bit wonky here compared to further out west.

Short answer, Yes.
Long answer: there's an entrance fee, and you can only camp at designated camping sites, and those usually have a fee as well. Some places have restrictions on how you store your food while camping as well.

Yes again (with the exception of places like Death Valley where tourist season generally is during the cooler times) summer is prime tourist season. I echo the sentent of camping on national forests. It's free to enter, and most places allow dispersed camping wherever you want and improved sites have a nominal fee of a few bucks.

USDA worker here. Grasslands are administered by the forest service. Unless it's critical wildlife area, they should be open for dispersed camping. Check with the local unit first though.
