You forgot to add, "anything with survival in the name." Hatchets is an odd one to have on the list. I can see not bringing an axe while camping, but a camp hatchet for small wood processing and bulk carving is something I use all the time.

A good hatchet is useful, but the question was "worst camping gear designs" among other things and I'd say 99.9% of hatchets are SHIT designs. Guess I could've been clearer, I'm not shitting on the idea of hatchets just how most of the ones out there are not well made.

Coghlan's camp soap is actually really fucking good. It's literally their only good product though.

If you're backpacking, you shouldn't be making fires large enough to require processed wood at all. If you're car camping, take an axe.

Most modern hatchet designs manage to be shit at both cutting and splitting because they have straight-ground but wide cheeks and overly heavy heads for their handle length so they balance like shit.

What is bulk carving? Not a term I'm familiar with can't argue that either way.

meh, multitool are good if you are camping and not light/ultralight hiking. Obv they need to be of good quality, no chink shit.

boxed wine can be good sometimes (eg mulled wine/brulè in winter)

non-load bearing small carabiners can be useful in many task and their weight/size is negligible.

inflatable pads just need some care and attenction, it depends on what type of /out/ are you in.

Large removal of wood you don't want on your carving. Like you have a small log and you want to make a boat paddle so you rough it out with a hatchet instead of whittling away forever with a roughing knife.

That depends on the weather. In bad wet weather you saw up small logs then contact split them so the drier insides can be more easily lit. Feathering is also a bit easier with larger sized limbs and a hatchet.

A light multitool like the Leatherman Wingman is great for a lot of stuff, like bending metal, grabbing hot stuff, pulling splinters, it has a pair of scissors, a knife, and screwdrivers.

Lensatic compasses are obsolete when mirror compasses exist.

Hard-anodized aluminum cookware is fine if you don't want to shell out for titanium.

Inflatable sleeping pads are light, warm, and comfortable.

Want real shit camping gear? Rambo knives, Lifestraw, and almost anything military surplus.

source: i'm a rockclimber and mountaineer with dozens of carabiners and when i'm backpacking all i bring is a 25 lb keyring carabiner to hang my bear bag.

Let me ask you this. What knot are you using to attach the carabiner with? The knots you learn to replace it will depend on the use. Most things can be done with hitch knots. There are many kinds from super simple to really complex. Some are adjustable and some not.

A clear baseplate compass with a sighting lens lets you shoot an azimuth as well as any lensatic compass, while making navigation with a map way easier. As a bonus, you can also use the mirror as a signalling mirror, or to check your face/teeth.

Fiskars are pretty serviceable imo. I've used some of the expensive brands in the past, and while they do objectively perform better, I've never really been disappointed in my x7.

I have been eyeing the x7 for a while now, looks like it would do alright. Still a little concerned about the cheek angles, they look like they're flat-ground so they'd be pure shit at splitting (not that you should do any serious splitting with a hatchet).

I have yet to find a decent machete that's as cost effective as a Fiskars. And while it doesn't split that well by hatchet standards, it is at least possible to do unlike with most machetes. It's up to you though, if I lived some other place with heavy vegetation I'd 100% carry a machete.

I did trail work for a while, hiking miles into very remote woods every single day. You know, like actually being /out/ and not just sitting inside hypothesizing about what might work while /out/,

A multitool was the only thing besides water that I always had to have. It has a little knife that fulfills every knife-task that you will need. It has a million uses in the woods, especially while doing work with machines and trees etc.

I guess this will make you cringe - I carried a Gerber multitool and it did an amazing job. Going on something like 8 years of using it constantly.

I'm not talking about edge geometry, I'm talking about the shape of the head. Specifically that the cheeks, the entire taper of the head, is flat on cheap hatchets when it needs to be either convex (splitting) or concave (anything other than splitting). Having a flat cheek is literally the worst of both worlds, but it's easy to forge so cheap hatchets have flat cheeks. In order to fix that you'd have to remove fully a quarter of the metal in the head of the hatchet, fucking up the balance of the hatchet, removing enough weight it's worthless at chopping, and knocking 80%+ off the lifespan of it.

I have "cancerous disposable plastic clothes" that I've been using for over 10 years. The only synthetic clothing I've had to replace, after 3 years of use, was a cheap bilaminate rainshell. Replaced it with a trilaminate hardshell that's still going strong.

On what planet are wool and cotton more wear and tear resistant than synthetics of similar weave and thickness? What kind of natural fabric has comparable water resistance compared to a modern hardshell?

Don't get me wrong, wool is awesome for socks and baselayers. Leather is great for gloves and boots. Down is the best insulation for puffy jackets or sleeping bags. But comparing wool to fleece, wax cotton to trilaminate, canvas to cordura, etc. the old-fashioned materials are clearly inferior.

You're kidding right? Aluminum forms aluminum oxide on its surface instantly. It wipes off super easily. If it doesn't get wiped off it will build up and the metal will turn white until something wipes it off again. If you aluminum cookware is all nice and shiny inside and not white then you are constantly ingesting it with your foodstuff. It isn't on the list of daily nutritional requirements, if you haven't noticed.

Only aluminium salts cause cancer and other illnesses you need a strong acid make them. Like concentrated hydrochloric acid. Under normal use my cell lasts about 2.5 days.

I could carry a machete, fixed blade knife, folding saw, and pocketknife and still have less weight and bulk than a small hatchet. But honestly for any serious cutting use a saw or full-size axe, anything not serious cutting you don't need anything more than a knife.

No, you don't need to do serious cutting while backpacking. Yes, if you're /out/ and NOT backpacking you have the room and weight allowance for a full size axe.

I generally find out what type of steel it is then research that a bit and check reviews. Most axes that have wooden handles are pretty good and it only comes down to style and the choice between stainless or carbon steels. The big difference is for bearded axes or any axe that has a cheek that is narrow between heel and handle. There are several fancier designs that are thin in that section which reduces the number of tasks you can use them for. An axe with a long beard is designed more for wood carving jobs since it allows you hand to clasp the top of the handle and be right behind a majority of the axe blade. That gives you more control while wood carving or simply making feather sticks. It isn't as durable for wood processing like chopping large trees down or splitting a cord of log rounds. The latter two tasks are better done by felling axes and double bit working axe than a camp axe. A bearded hatchet will be fine as a camp axe.

FYI, the one in your image is a bit pricey for a wee tiny hatchet. However, the steel 5160 is very durable and a great choice for a hatchet. If it is cared for properly and it is kept it oiled, your great grandchildren will still be using it.

I just use one of these and keep it in a pants pocket. I have it hooked to a lanyard that is attached to a belt loop and have a strip of Velcro around it to always keep it closed until I really need to get into it. Mine just has, "Woodstream," on it, no model number/name. When I use less stuff, I just pack the gear in an Altoids tin.

Those are trash only because the green metal they give you is a bit too small (use the spine of your knife instead) and the little plastic handle usually falls off pretty quickly and isn't very good for leverage. Most people pull the handle off and whittle a longer wooden handle then epoxy it in place. The handle will either be on the end or it the ferro rod will be mounted in a shallow grove on top of a strip of wood and epoxied in place (like those magnesium block firestarters). I prefer the 1/2" x 6" ferro rods with the hole for a lanyard over those tiny sticks.

I use them more than my lighters. The tinder bundle needs to be built in the same manner for any style of fire lighting without say BBQ grill fluid or similar accelerant. A single spark from a rod or a lighter gets a tinder bundle going just the same. What I don't often to is to make an ember from two sticks for friction firemaking. I do that only enough to keep good at doing it.

Ferro rods last for 10s of thousands of fires. Lighters run out fairly quickly in comparison.

I use a lighter every day to light a gas burner for cooking meals. They last about 6 months to a year at best. That's max 3 meals a day and they are larger lighters than little Bic lighters. The flame is only used a scant second or two and set to medium flame.

Some how I seriously doubt the made up numbers you are spouting. Even the large Bic lighters are only advertised to light 3k cigs, most likely when set to low flow.

Ray Mears also uses them and teaches people how to use them. Though, he seems to prefer friction fire making on most shows. I must say though, he is a fucking wizard at making it look easy. I don't buy the adjustable-flame Bics. Which are getting harder to find. I've had that little stem break off kicking around in my pocket and leave me set to the wrong flame height. I also think they're less efficient, but since I've never run either out of fuel that's simply me shaking it an going "hmm this seems lower than it should be" which is in no way empirical.

Wish I could agree, but I have a bad back. I've tried every single way you can pitch one, tried sleeping at every degree of diagonal I could, bought several good ones ranging from 9-12ft long, had other experienced hammockers set mine up for me, tried with a structural ridgeline, just not enough back support for me.

Damn that sucks. Hell I can still occasionally find Bics without the child lock here, as well as about a dozen brands of cheaper lighters and crack torches. When I still smoked I kept a cheapo mini to loan out because inevitably someone would walk off with my lighter.

Kinda wish Djeep lighters were cheaper. About the only thing they do better than a Bic is they are a little more wind resistant but you can get them in some huge sizes so they have more fuel and are harder for others to pocket

I hiked the pct with a molle pack that cost $18 off aliexpress. I used an aluminum mess kit from walmart and had a bunch of "tactical" branded stuff because it's cheap.

It worked for me, nothing broke down or got wrecked. HYOH faggots. The only people who hassled me for my gear choices were other women and male ultralight babbys who can't lift a full toothbrush without chopping off the handle.

I wouldn't take a hatchet or axe if you're not going bushwhacking though. Even then a folding saw seems better imo.

A roughing knife (pic) is just a short wood carving knife with a straight edge that you use to remove large chunks of material on smaller sized workpieces; which are too small to use a drawknife, shavespoke, or planer with. You normally use straight-away cuts with a roughing knife. The narrow tip of a roughing knife allows you to do a few more detailed set of cuts with out the need for switching to a chip knife in most cases.

All edged tools should have a proper sheath. A knife with a bent blade is no different and when proper stowed won't be a problem. The bent knife you see in >>1434093 is a hook knife or spoon knife used for carving bowls and recesses. That one has a longer blade which has a straight section for even more functionality. You can even get spoon carving scorps which have a blade shaped like a tear drop or circle and has no point.

This is a chip knife. The roughing knife is the largest of the chipping knives, but isn't dedicated to the actual chip carving. He's using that knife because he's drawing it towards his body and prefers to have a blunt end instead of the sharp tip of his sloyd style knife.
