Any ausfailians here?

I'm currently building up my camping and survival equipment and knowledge. Problem is that most online information is written for North Americans.
I know there is stuff I would be forgetting so..
What equipment and knowledge do you think is vital uniquely for Australians, stuff that you wouldn't find in American guides.

Personally I think a good swag/bivvi is important as well as a hoochie/tarp.

ive been doing the same thing but so far havent found anything that could be done in NA but not AUS. the only thing thats really different that ive noticed is flora/fauna (what you can eat off plants etc.)

learn how to properly deal with snake bikes (its more than likely the way you may have bean taught as a kid is wrong). Its pretty much a must for all of australian outdoor regions. Also - be super fucking careful with fire.

most things are pretty much the same as other places (its about using your head).

Some miscellaneous words of advice.

Bring lots of sunscreen, the 40+ shit will do nicely. Fly spray/repellent to avoid annoying flys. Hats are a must, the ones with corks hanging from them on strings do good in keeping flys away from the face.

If you ever take your shoes off in the bush NEVER PUT THEM ON AGAIN UNLESS YOU SHAKE THEM FOR SNAKES. I can't stress enough how many people have learned that the hard way.

And if you find yourself in a bad situation (spider bite, snake bite, Abo asking for change, etc.) call 000 not 911.

Also, the outback isn't as good as the bush in my opinion. And go around autumn (fall) so it's not too damn hot.

Definitely important to know but its better to prevent snake bites, mainly by stepping down on the ground hard.

All depends on the scenario I suppose. Swags can be used in most scenarios where as tents cannot, but of course tents are better in some scenarios. Also you can get swags that double as bivvis giving you more flexibility.

I know you can use a lot of Australian plants to make insect repellant, eucalyptus being an obvious one.
Some plants can be used to make sunscreen but I can't remember which ones, trying to find some old info.

What do you mean by outback and bush precisely?
I like mallee scrub personally.

FFS, you need to stop thinking like an American as well.

Australia has people who do long-distance multi-week wildness traveling-- better known as 'bushwalkers'. Ever heard of them?

You won't need a -15C outside of the KNP, but -5 to zero is certainly the go at this time of year across the continent.

The supply of water is not a problem except fair off the coast, but you'll need a filter. Every bushwalking trail will have trailnotes with information like water (www.wildwalks.com..) Even if yer not a greeniehappiefaggot and yer gonna go tacticool, you'll want to study the information they've got-- BECAUSE GETTING YOUR MORONIC ARSE WINCHED OUT BY HELICOPTER is an indelible mark of Absolute Fail.

Bushwalking is a big hobby here-- there are a lot of resources for hiking and camping-- a good place to find books are the Map shops.

Particularly around the Blue Mountains, you can freely borrow PLBs from the Police stations. But mobiule phones are always a good idea.

Aussie bushwalkers generally pack lighter (and are usually walking as groups, to make things easier). Because of that, the lack of needing "mah ankle support!" sees a lot of people in Volleys.

I'm skeptical you've ever bushwalked. You're not wrong, its just that its not hard to stand on one if you take your eye off the trail for a second (or hell, walking through the bush).

From what I gather, besides the differences in flora/fauna, the majority of Australia is quite similar in environment to Arizona (temp/terrain). Obviously, there are differences, but we've got a lot of venemous wildlife as well... Although our snakes usually give us a warning as they come with a rattle.

If you are havin trouble finding non-NA /out/ info, you may want to look into suggestions from NA desert environments. Just an idea anyway.

One thing I have discovered while being /out/ innadesert, as weird as it sounds despite the lack of what most would consider trees, a hammock/tarp set up is awesome out here instead of a tent. It's usually lighter and when you consider the amount of rocky/uneven terrain, makes for a more pleasant sleep.

112 is the emergency number to use in Australia now-- all carriers _have_ to route the calls from anyone, any phone, anywhere. You don't even need a SIM.

"000" is only guaranteed for the same carrier the phone is listed with.

Seriously, there's a thousand and one Australian bushwalking and outback travel websites: bushwalkers, 4WD, caravan, Grey Nomads, Duke of Ed, Scouts, etc., and they've got experience with the country that's over a hundred years. There's no need to listen to a Seppo.
