I was 10 at the time but i grew out of it, still hunt and fish and slaughtered farm animals every once in a while.
It definitely shaped my character and gave me perspective about guns

I shot a squirrel with an air rifle this morning. I didn't one hit kill it, and it wiggled away before I could reload. It probably bled out in terrible pain a few hours later.

When I was around 7 or 8 I had a bb-gun. I used it for target practice on cans and paper sheets. One day I was touring around our backyard and I found a Gartner snake chilling on the rocks. We lived in an incredibly wooded area, so there were tons of them around. Usually I would catch them with my autistic friend. The day I was exploring with my bb-gun, I decided to see what would happen if I shot it point blank. I have little idea what I was thinking, perhaps I just wanted to see what would happen. I shot it and it immediately convulsed. Its internal organs began to pop out of the hole I had made. I was shocked and immediately regretted doing that, but I had neither the wisdom nor the balls to put it out of its misery. I told myself after then that I would never harm an animal ever again. A year or two later, the snake was still alive, scarred and all. My mother saw it and scolded me, but the lesson was already learned.
