Went fishing for the first time since childhood, spent an hour finding and killing two caterpillars, trouts just swam around instead, none of those twats wanted to get hooked up.

I honestly expected those trouts to go piranha mode, the caterpillars are their dream food, but they didn't, maybe they're too fed up. All hose survival movies show guys catching giant salmons literally with some self-made hooks and no bait at all.

True, as I waved the stick around they sort of rushed a bit, trying to chase the bait, or maybe just play, that wasn't making me happy anyway. I think those weren't the typical fish to easy to catch.

I couldn't hook them alive and watch them suffering, instant kill is the only way. I read once the smell is in the stream, all the fish down the flow rush to the sourse, the bait.

That’s fishing. Some days they just aren’t biting. Try another bait or a different fly or lure. Sometimes I’ll float a baited hook down stream on a leaf and flip it off near a rock or an under cut on the bank.

Never tried caterpillars, but the trick around here is catching a grasshopper and squeezing it's head gently until it stops moving, then thread the hook through it's abdomen and cast. It'll wake up after a minute or two and start trying to swim. Fish go insane for that.

Read a few articles, apparently my chances on successfull catch were very bleak, trout comes to be not your typical kind of fish and needs thorough approach.

use 4lb line, let it drift on the top naturally or set a limb line with heavier test rating and stay away from where they can see you, trout have pretty good eye sight

For bait, I like to use hoppers. Should be the length measured from the tip of your thumb to the first joint. Look for ones with yellow bellies and red legs, if you got them where you live.

A small hook, preferably red, is also needed. There's no point in using a big hook. Hook shouldn't be bigger than your thumbnail.

Approach the stream cautiously, and don't approach directly where the trout are. It's best to start further away and inch forward on subsequent casts.

Presentation is more important than your choice of bait. Bait moving through feeding lanes, jiggling naturally, will result in stronger hits.

If the trout are in moving water such as a stream, cast upstream into the moving water and try to keep the bait on the edge between fast and slow moving water.

Remember, you can only set the hook once, so make it count, and don't jerk the pull several times when the fish is hooked. Play it slow. If the fish wants to run with it, give it a little pressure to tire it out, but don't give much tension on the line. Trout are masterful spitters, and having strong tension on the line usually results in a lost fish. Reel in when you can, but let it run when it wants to (unless it's going to wrap around branches or go down a waterfall that is).

that's what i'm not convinced by. only some species are known to be excellent bait, and others may very well have a bad scent/taste. some will even be poisonous. seems better to just find some good soil and dig up worms.

Thanks for the great advice, that pretty much sums up the whole subject. Do you usually catch the bait(hoppers, etc.) right on location or you get them beforehand? There's not a lot of b8 im my place, no flies, mosqs, worms, while looking for any insects, found a scorpion, two snakes and a freaking crab, very stressfull I'd say.

For the bait, either way. Sometimes I'll catch a dozen or so hoppers in the morning. Rarely I'll catch them the night before. A quick tip is to stuff the hoppers into a women's leg nylon ($0.50 for a few). It keeps them alive because they have plenty of air and they stay dry... They can cook in a tin if it gets warm. With the nylon, you can catch them the day before and leave them in a cool, dry place like the garage.

Pic related is the kind of hopper I use. Worms also work great. I have used artificial bait (spinners, flies for fly fishing, etc.) but I have best luck on live bait.

Often times I do catch and release. Trout is tasty, but it's very soft flesh. Lately, I've been freezing some filets and then salt curing and cold smoking them in batches. Turns out similar to smoked salmon

My recipe is to weigh the fish, take 3% of that weight in non iodized table salt, and rub it into the flesh. Add some brown sugar even, why not. Put it in a baggy for like a week... The salt will pull liquid out of the fish, and the liquid will reabsorb back into the fish. When the flesh is firm and slightly tacky, it's done.

Then you can optionally cold smoke it to add wood flavor. They sell burners on Amazon that smolder sawdust in a spiral. Put them in a box with enough air for the smoldering to continue, and come back hours later.

Cured and smoked trout. Can eat plain or on a bagel or whatever

Forgive the messy fillet job. First time trying a new technique

Oh and I leave the skin on for the curing. It keeps the flesh from falling apart, if you're hanging the filets for cold smoking (you don't have to, just put it on a rack for good air flow) you can pierce the filet through the skin and it'll keep it together while it hangs

Sometimes you get that. They stock the streams and lakes where I live. You can sometimes tell when you get a trout that just got dumped in the creek an hour before and when you get a trout that's 4th generation or some shit

I haven't eaten it raw because where I live, the mountains are open to grazing. Which means ranchers pay a fee to let their cattle wander through the mountains. Every stream is potentially contaminated, so it's not advised you drink from streams without a proper filter.

Cooking on the fire would be awesome too. Bring some salt and pepper. If possible bring a pad of butter even and brush it with a small pine twig with needles.

I cook my trout over the fire when I am backpacking in the mountains of Wyoming, and it's dynamite

Clarify that shit, bring a small container of ghee. Keeps better without refrigeration that way (but don't smash the container). Just brush it onto the fish with moss or fern.
